Sad and upsetting times. (Short-ish Version) Always dreamed of owning a scooby and finally got one 6 months ago at the age of 30 a classic 99 turbo 2000 for £2000 owned it for two weeks and the turbo blows. car is uprated with vf28, sti top mount i/c, uprated fuel pump and fuel pressure reg, ecutek remap, RCM headers up-pipe and de-cat down-pipe with rcm cone air filter, took it took graham goode to get the turbo replaced with oil filter and change, then 10 days later my down-pipe snaps off so i take it to roger clark motorsports and he quoted me £3,200 to bring the car up to scratch i.e. new headers as they were rotten with air filter as it had that stupid hks mushroom one one and to also fix up all the bodges previous owners had done with poorly mounting the i/c and coilpack floating off the pegs causing a missfire, stuff like that. It all needed doing as there wouldn't be no point re-mapping it unless fuel air and spark where working properly.

Well i had it back 3 weeks ago and was just getting used to it as awd, flat four and Scooby'sin general are all new to me, ALWAYS let it warm up and cool down and rearly booted it as its a lot of power to get used to after driving a fiat punto gt turbo for 2 years well on my way to work this morning (which was my last day as well) i heard a crunch noise literally 5 corners from my house almost like the sort of noise you get when you grind your gears. As soon as i heard it i pulled over straight away and just as i pulled up rolling still the engine cut out by its self. i switched it off and had a look under the bonet only to see oill running past my feet and oil on top and up the back of the engine. i know it is by far a very vague description but does any one have ideas. I personally think the internal have shot but im not mechnically minded as such. i got recovered but they didnt really say anything just towed me to my house. I'm beginning to resent buying it now as this car has cost me £6500 so far of which im still in debt from having to borrow the £3000 to get it fixed last time not to mention i have no other transport and my mrs is starting to hate me as this is the story of my relationships with cars as the punto cost me thounds. Sorry to go on guys just needed a grumble and a grown. so what is my cheepest options rebuild standard internals, 2nd hand engine? Cheers guys

 

Feel for you pal....but firstly why on earth did you take it to Goode's in the first place? Great place for sourcing parts but if you're around Leicester then there's plenty of Scooby comps that can take care of you at probably cheaper prices.

Without more info and where the oil is coming from it's hard to say what the issue is and whether or not a rebuild or replacement is what you need.

 

Unfortunate... but not uncommon on older cars.

Sell it, cut your losses.

 

You need to make sure it is yor engine first, get under there and inspect where the oil is coming from would be the first thing to check bud before condeming the motor, have a look up around the top also for oil pipes leaking on the turbo etc, have a good look and snap some pics of the area concerned and get them posted up here, people will be able to help you further then.

**** happens, chin up either take the decision to carry on with the car or get shot and start again, what a bad time of year for it to happen tho and I know exactly how my mrs reacts "if" she finds out what's gone on or what I have spent never a good thing having the old caged dragon on your back she don't normally mind but as of lately I think she's getting annoyed at the stuff I'm buying and not booked a holiday

 

bad news, must have been some work at RCM for £3,200 ???? that would buy you a v6 sti lol let alone fix a uk turbo

not good mate where in the mids are u from?? £3200 ouch that seems a bit expensive for headers/downpipe must of had alot of little issues as surely that sort of price is nearly a full engine build hope you get it sorted mate

Worse case scenario,

If the engines buggered then just put a Sti 8/9 engine in it. You can pick them up for £1.500 and you'll have a much better car. Few extra wires for the AVCS heads will be needed.

Have you contacted RCM again to see if they would be able to offer any assistance, they may have forgotten to torque something up correctly and its worked its way loose. I know RCM have a good rep and Im not saying the work they did was below a high standard but maybe just maybe something was missed on the work done?

crap for you mate - like mentioned earlier was a big expense to sort out- i've had 6 impreza's and the only fault i've had was a replaced maf sensor - don't give up on them.

 

£3200 for headers and sorting odds and bobs out

could have got a new one for that

 

agree on that,rcm is only up the road from me and im sure their labour charge is £50+ per hour so they must have spent along time on it

what exactly was done? have you any paperwork?

 

could turn out the list is massive, but thats in the relms of sacking if off for another one.

You must have more money than sense to spend £3200 on a £2k classic. Sorry if that sounds harsh but it's true my friend. I'd have been happy to help with the original problems. Unfortunately you're a long way away, but my point is there's many here who would/could have helped. Spending that amount was crazy in the first place, you could have spent £3200 on a really nice classic and had two!

Thanks for your support and sympathy as fellow scooby enthusiast. From the beginning i did say it was the short-ish version. I took it goode's because i didn't know about RCM at the time (i live right next to Hinckley how could i not) also goode got recommended to me. they did a shabby job of fitting the turbo anyway hence why i set out to find a proper subaru specialist which is when i found out RCM was on my door step. I will get some photos up tomorrow for you all to see. It may seem like it was an expensive bill from rcm for what i listed but again i did say the shortish version. I dealt with Olly from start to finish and what he and his boys did to my car was totally transforming as it was a total mess and many previous owners bodges to sort out let alone general wear and tear. the customer service was amazing. Ok its a little more expensive then other places but i will never ever go anywhere else they are fantastic and the customer service was fit for a king lol he also did some knocked abit off the final bill which was really appreciated. I really don't think it's anything that they have done or not done as i do really think its internal. Its rainning cats and dogs so i can't really do anything until tomorrow now but will post up some pics.

RCM always give great customer service !!...you dont need to spend a fortune there to recieve it as well , but having said that I would of thought you would of been advice to sell the car as it been uneconomical to repair it !,

All the uprated RCM parts are wasted on a £2k Impreza

Well Mr Olly Clark popped round last night as promised (nice one mate) And pretty much confirmed for me what we all was thinking.... a rod had shot through the top of the engine so it looks like im walking for a few more months again while we scrimp and scrap the funds together again and lol and decide what is the best way forward. god is the dragon cage rattled now guys.

 

Bad luck

I had my car 7 weeks and it spun a bearing and needed a rebuild cost 3.3k so know how your feeling.

 

Hindsight isn't much help to you now.
Lets hope that both RCM & GG do the right thing!
