Power Surge-Help!!!

My Scooby is not well!!
I have a 98'WRX and until this morning everything was tops. However, throughout this mornings drive I seemed to be getting massive power surges in 3rd/4th and 5th gears.
Basically it's OK when I hit about 3.5k revs and the boost kicks in, but when I hit 4k it warps around to 7k all of a sudden.
What's wrong?
