How much power is too much for the roads?
Discussions that are arising in other forums so would be interesting seeing your guys views.
What are your thoughts on what power levels are optimum in a Scooby for every day driving.
Don't confuse with big powered Scoobs built for competition, but for our every day cars.

Id say 450 is ample, thats too much on a damp day imo, driving my last one which was 345/336 compared to 453/436 is like night and day, it was easier to push on through the bends along the mountain roads in my last one using all of the rev range and power range, cant drive the same roads as quick in this one.................. YET but ill get there

I had a standard Scooby and it would get to the back of the next queue just as quickly, in the real world, as anything with silly power.
I honestly believe that 200BHP is the very best balance for real roads in the real world, that said, my Honda does all required on the real roads - so, maybe 350Nm's is ample?

If your overtaking, then the faster you get past stuff, the less time your on the wrong side of the road, therefore the safer you are! So in theory the point of too much power comes down to how much it takes to lose traction when accelerating in a straight line on the grippyest road you'll encounter.
In reality though, 400 ish in an awd road car is pretty spot on as long as spool and therefore drivability hasnt been too compromised to get it!
But to quote Stan Lee, "with great power comes great responsibility" .... so really "too much power" is only actually "too much power" when the fella behind the wheel chooses to use too much of it at the wrong time! Or chooses to bolt too much power into a chassis without the brakes and suspension to deal with it!
Id put money on there being alot of people on this forum who are guilty of wanting pub number cars when in reality they never use more than 50% throttle!

I'm not running much power (little over 400) in my classic but often find I turn the boost down when driving around. 99% of the time you don't need 400bhp, infact I found the power more useable when I was at 340.
In a newage I'd think 400 is a good drive and not too much of a handful but in a classic 350 is where it's at IMO.
Well setup classic with decent brakes and a punchy little 350bhp is a great car.

Thats the problem right there..On todays crowded roads its almost impossible to use a fraction of these cars power and even if you can there is a nice man parked up on the side if the road ready to take your picture.....Thats why more and more people are taking to trackdays to enjoy their cars.

And i get a bit open and offensive when speaking to the 600bhp bodykit barry boys ..... 120bhp is just as fast as 600bhp when its parked in a maccyD's car park!

but track days still have the same problem, at coombe earlier in the year, cant remember the show but i spoke to jay there.
a guy had tuned up his nissan to 300bhp and not bothered with the brakes , second lap stamped on them and nothing as they had overheated and went straight into the tyres
so 600bhp may be dangerous but 300 is just as bad if you cant stop.

I've thought a lot about this prior to my major engine build. I came to the conclusion that 450 was my desired self imposed maximum. That said, I have APs, chassis enhancements etc. which is critical to any discussion.

355 in my wide track blob sti. It's more than enough to have fun in going to work / shops or out for a blast. Why would you need 500 + in a road car? I very rarely meet much I can't pass.

Power is a funny thing you think the car your driving is fast and then a month later you think there's something wrong with the car because it feels slower to you or maybe it needs a service, but the truth of the matter is that you have just got use to the power and need to modify it further to get that THIS CAR IS WICKEDLY QUICK feeling back again.
