I've only ever found the silicone remover to be a right pain.
Tried it twice now to remove old silicone in the shower, personally I've found it just end up making the job twice as long.

I use a Stanley blade, or a VERY flexible kitchen knife, honed to an edge, to remove all but scraps of silicone.

Then use silicone remover.

AFAIK, it doesn't harm paint.........but what sort of paint are we talking about? House? Car?

use blade to get as much off as you can , then the silicone remover (or Autoglym Tar remover in my case) will do its job better.

theres a product windscreen fitters use to remove it, but you have to scrape literally as much as possible of first. Just cant think what the stuffs called. panel wipes is good to remove it from hands might be worth a try.
