Default best place for new engine?

Hello i am new to this so forgive me if i am posting in the wrong place, I brought a 1995 subary classic from a FRIEND 2 months ago and have had constant problems, The first week the car had to go to Alan Jerrorys in Plymouth for £800 worth of work. Ok so now i figured the car should be good to go... I figured wrong a week later the engine blew up!! I am looking for another engine because the pistons have gone on mine not to mention the bottom end, so have been advised to get a different engine but where to start? Ideal engines have terrible reviews has anyone delt with API engines? I obviously don't want to chance buying one from ebay or anywhere like that. Thans

Just in case anybody with a degree in reading between lines gets the wrong idea, I've cut and pasted this PM reply!

"Hi Alan i wasn't implying at all that it has anything to do with your work more to do with a so called friend selling me a car he knew was failing, I am more than happy with the work that you carried out and i hope my thread doesn't imply otherwise, I spoke to the garage that the car had been in previously and they had a list as long as my arm that the previous owner had been told about the main thing was compression problems, pistons you name it they had it on thier list. I would be very interested in the block and i will call you on Tuesday. Many thanks Gavin"

We sorted out the brakes and numerous oil leaks..

Find a cheap running classic, rob the engine and saleable bits and scrap it...by far the cheapest way to get an engine for a standard car without raping your wallet.

Yeah **** your pants hilarious

If you do it properly you`ll make a profit and have an engine, laughing all the way to the bank

For example, beginning of the summer £600 spent on a light shunt 1998 Subaru, excellent runner etc... Has without even trying Subaru 4 Pots, STi Strut brace, working gearbox, aftermarket wheels to name but a few... rob the engine, sell the goodies, scrap the rest, job done...

If you can suggest a better/cheaper way of getting an engine in to a 1995 subaru that`s worth a grand at best...type way
