Paint protection systems - worth it ?
With the new-ish (2011) car I have just put a deposit on the dealer offered a paint protection job, "Paintguard" I think he called it. Do these sort of applications work and protect the paint over the years ? I am not an avid fan of car cleaning/polishing ! It falls into the " have to do it" category so a protection system that does work has some appeal !!
Any experiences/views much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi, I'm in the motor trade and have to say that if applied correctly the paint protection is generally quite good. My garage uses a product called G3 and we only charge £245 to apply it. I've worked at other dealers who charge up to £399 for it. Ultimately they all do the same thing but rarely cost the dealers more than £100 to supply and fit so don't pay too much!!

Had mine "Supagarded" (http://www.supagard.co.uk/) as part of the PDI.
Today 20 months down the road its holding out pretty well with just the occasional application of polish/quick detailer.

Personnely I don't think it is worth paying the dealer to do it. I would sooner take the car
To a detailer and have it done. Much better job in my opinion and probably a bit cheaper
Too. I work in the motor trade and we charge £400 for it to be done.

Lots of threads on detailing world about that and supaguard and the other Similer ones are generally good but the profits are massive on them and is a nice little profit for the garage and maybe bigger commission for the salesman then the car itself
For £300-£400 far better spending the money on detailing and quality waxes and polishes and equipment to do the job properly and even get the car machine polished after a couple of years if there was a few scratches in it
It's a shame you don't like waxes as its a great part of enjoyable car ownership

This used to be a good way of upping my wages when I worked in the trade, save the money the dealer is asking and as others have said and take it to a reputable detailer in your area, that way you know the job will be done to a decent standard.

STOP STOP STOP Right now! Ok first let me tell you that the product you are buying from a dealer for £250/£399 costs the dealer around £20.
The very same products ie Supagard/Diamondbrite can be bought off ebay for around £5-£10.Having this done at a dealer is nothing short of being ripped off big big style.I worked at a Ford main dealer about 10 years ago who charged £399 for Diamondbrite,Out of your £399 the salesman will get about £80 commision, the valeter will get about £7 to apply it & the rest is profit to the dealership. The salemen where I worked were adding Diamondbrite to peoples car purchases without them even knowing & some of them were making £800/£1000 a month just on that alone.Lastly to give you something else to think about We never had any kind if training as to go about applying this stuff properly (not rocket science tho) but thats not the point,we were just handed it & told to put it on.
As to whether its any good I have never used it long enough to really give any good judgement, but if it is as good as it claims to be it will leave any other kind of waxes/pastes redundant as there is no point in putting them on top of a paint protection system.Your choice.
