Default newbie after some info

evening all,

i was after some advice and information on some sti's... (i have leaflets from the doctor) i am after one from between 03-06 ish plate and was wondering what were the main differences between the 2.0 and 2.5? which one is stronger? is one more easily mapped etc? are the brakes etc the same?

as you can guess i am new to scoobies!! i currently drive a leon cupra r mk1 with 285bhp but with another child on the way i need more room behind the drivers seat for another baby seat!! i was thinking about going back to the evo but as it would be the one "family car" as such i thought the scoob would be a better idea.

Hi and welcome to scoobynet

2.0 engine is the stronger if looking to modify it a lot. The 2.5 is a great engine with loads of torque but needs some money spent on it if looking for big power ( >350bhp ) and reliability. Give one a try though as the torque and drivability on a well mapped version are addictive.

I used to have a mk1 Leon and I really dont think there is any more rear seat room in the Impreza though.

All 03-06 STi brakes are the same with the Brembo calipers.

Really? I thought there would have been? I could fit the baby seat in behind in the evo.... Better have a look in one then!!!

What are the standard internals capable of on both without too much stress?

baby seats sit fine in imprezas my blob sti even has isofix points

05 blob STI with widetrack and DCCD is the one mate. And even better find a JDM car, rare and usually demand a higher price.
Plenty of room in the back for two baby seats too and the added bonus of a decent sized boot.

Just been looking at that myself mate. 8.5k is about 1k over my budget. Would have been fine had I not just got the missus a motor too.

You'll find a nice 05 plate STI within your budget mate, prices have dropped hugely lately for these.

i think the 2 litres are capable of 400ish , the 2.5 best to keep standard afaik but i`m a classic man. ive heard alot of horror stories with 2.5s, i wouldnt have one put it that way

That's nice aswell... Guessing it's knowing what to look for... I only just found out what dccd is. Haha.

What's the service schedule on these? When does the belt etc need doing?

Belts are 50K I think and I'd like to see one serviced every 8K as a min.

That's the impression I was under with the 2.5. I think I'm going 2.0 tbh

Welcome

You basically have 3 types of engines to choose from, the UK 2ltr, the UK 2.5ltr and the best of the bunch, the JDM 2ltr twin scroll unit
Its the most responsive unit out of the 3 with the best power band, but you have to look carefully to get a good one, there is a nice red spec c limited for sale in the for sale section (and on pistonheads I think) if its not sold already for 9k, this isnt a wide track model but boasts a fair few mods over the "standard" STI cars (like quick rack steering, still has the A-DCCD, engine and transmission oil coolers, proper ones , or just look for a wide track MY05 onwards JDM (you will also find most are in the lower car tax bracket which saves you 200+ quid a year )
Its definately the best of the bunch, just watch out for some of the companies that sell them, anything in the Bradford area is to be avoided like the plague.

this might be a silly question but is there a way to tell if the car is/has widetrack and dccd or do you just have to go by the description of the seller?

DCCD control in the car.
Widetrack will have the plastic arch extensions on the rear as in the two links I put up.

This model came out in 2005 in the UK.

im presuming the dccd offers a massive improvement on handling over the non dccd? or is it marginal?

The 05 model also has an updated slightly nicer interior when differentiating the models. The widetrack I believe helps correct the understeer of the MY03 car which was shown on the episode of top gear around the top gear test track when they used a wr1. I assume its solved the problem but I dont think Top Gear ever used a MY05 around their track.
