I've always fancied a Subaru and now I can finally get insured on one I've started looking...

I prefer the 2004-2006 Blob eye Wrx Sti 2.0 with but no other mods.

Colour: is it pipe dream to think that if I wait long enough a white one will become available under 7.5k?

Also, in your experience, where's the most competitive for insurance? I'm 29 year old female with 10 years driving, no accidents, but through being a named driver only have 1 yrs no claims.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated .

Plenty of standard stis out their but only a few uk white sti s
Always full service history and preferably serviced by Subaru or specialist Subaru .

Other than that just look at 5 with no intension of buying from a dealer and see the quality differences ....
Hammered seats gear **** steering wheel good sign that cars had heavy use. It could be low miles but has been thrashed for every mile...
Or higher miles but pristine so it's had a good life .

I know no one buys a scooby for mpg, but im trying to gauge how much an sti is going to cost compared to a wrx model, oth with PPP?

Can anyone help me with the figures please?

Oh and thirdly I average 22ish mpg pottering about but have had 30ish on a long run. Mine`s a 2003 Blob STI PPP with around 340bhp, hth.

 

Cheers for that!! That sounds not bad at all.... Has it been mapped for extra mpg? (I doubt it has but have to ask..!)

 

30ish on a long run would be at less than 60mph and around town you will see around 16mpg, average on a run is going to be mid 20's and super unleaded only.
Also, dont pick one colour, it really narrows down your choice, just pick the best car available to you

If you get one that's been mod,d then a unique map is best I:e bob Rawls or jgm. I now have a sti hawkeye with 350 hp and I average mid 20's with a mixture of town and short motorway runs, if I'm on a run at a steady 80ish then I'll get closer to 30 mpg. I used to have a modded wrx to 290 hp and got similar mpg,s as well

 

I had a uk wrx and now a jdm sti and tbh around town the mpg is the same, I get between 19 and 21, on a run the wrx was better and got close to 30 but never exceeded it, whereas the sti with its lower gearing never gets above 25. They are not cheap to run but no more than any other car that has similar performance. Parts are reasonably priced and as I do some work myself they are easy to work on, very reliable and gives a smile every time I go out, so well worth it in my opinion. Go and find one at a dealer and have a test drive.

I'm just torn between the all out sti or the wrx.....I've test driven a standard wrx 221 bhp, then couple of hrs later an sti ppp which blew my mind!!

I have my eye on a wrx in pristine condition which has 270bhp, but I'm concerned about the tension on the engine with that increase...what's your thoughts...

 

Get the STI. If you buy a wrx you'll only start fiddling with it to get it to at least an STI spec. The running costs between the 2 are negligible.

22 mpg on average in mine, 2005 sti standard. Like above. Go for sti. Less modding, good starter for more power at a later date.

 

definatly go for the sti if you can afford to, the 6th gear makes things a lot better on the motorway as well, remember as much as we buy these cars for their performance we probably only ever use it 20% of the time at most so when your cruising somewhere i now definatly prefer my sti to the wrx, i had my wrx modded to 290 and it took this easily though so if you do go down the wrx route you will prbably hit your tuning level at around 340 ish before you have to spend big money

 

Theirs a reason the STI blews your mind because its the one to buy. I felt like that after my first test drive. Over two years later I still Enjoy what is the best car I've ever owned.

 

Welcome, just to add some balance to this discussion because as usual most bang on about the STI and i'm getting a little bored of repeating myself.

If you plan on modding then the STI all the way as it is a better base car for modding.

If you want a less in your face, more comfortable car that is just as quick if not slightly faster than a standard unmolested STI then a PPP WRX is the one to go for or get the WRX remapped and spend a few hundred on some handling mods and good discs and pads and hey presto standard STI beater.

The Wrx has longer gears and softer suspension which is slightly easier to live with on a day to day basis, it's also lighter than an STI due to the gearbox, the engine internals are not as strong as the STI and neither is the gearbox but if looked after and modded by the right people it will handle circa 350bhp, and there are plenty running those numbers, and even with the STI there are plenty that have broken something well before those figures, as with all things in life, it's a roll of the dice.

As for mpg, if you fit a turbo boost gauge and drive gently keeping it off boost around town it's possible to get around 28mpg and on a run i have had 33 mpg but you do need to pay attention and make sure it's off boost and once you start booting it that goes out the window, you'll be closer to 15mpg than 30mpg so a significant difference.

As with everything it depends on your criteria, personal preferences and future plans as to which you choose, the STI costs slightly more to run but we're only talking about things like brake pads and discs which are milage and use dependant.

I'd make sure whatever you buy has a full service history and cambelt and tensioners and all fluids replaced as this can cost in excess of £500 , also make sure the brakes and tyres are in good condition with plenty of life left in them because if you get this wrong you will be looking at the best part of £2k to sort the lot.

 

I averaged around 30 on one of my trips to see my ex gfriend in Kent (235 miles) driving at 70 - 75 mph all the way, boring drive but achievable.

As I said, pottering around / town driving I get around 22 mpg! I`d have to cane mine EVERYWHERE to get an average as low as 16

Not really, a new age STI will only do 16-18 in town and around 30 on a good run, try filling up to the brim, then doing the miles then filling up again, you will be a little shocked it wont be as good as you thought (but you have to do the math )

Sure on previous uk subaru's i've owned it advise's 97 ron on filler cap area
Personally would never run on anything less

 

Read the handbook it clearly states 95 ron fuel, for which they are mapped with the exception of STI's, so your UK turbo's and WRX's can all run 95 ron with no issues.

Sorry to be a mong but want to clarify then which fuel has to be used for a 05 sti type uk?
If it needs to be 99 it could be a deal breaker

 

I would use Shell V power or tesco 99 minimum 97 super unleaded as long as mapped

 

I just got a white sti blobeye... paid £6750 for it and i love it! needs the roof re painting but i can live with that....

Dont rush out and buy the first you see i almost gave in and got a black one but im sooo glad i held out for a white one!
