Default Turbo failure signs??

Hi all,
Do turbo units generally show signs of failure or just fail??
Mine has over last couple days started to sound very whinny all the time, also started to smoke slightly when driving normal.
Thanks Sean

Better you sort it now than wait as further use could cause more damage.

Cheers guys.
ill have to get the old mk1 golf out then Not the weather I wanted to bring her out in, but rather than that then big damage.

Has anyone used refurb kits on their turbo`s??
If it did need to be replaced, what would be a sensible upgraded turbo that would be an easy fit?
