Default Jimmy's got a Type R

Thought i'd be the 1st to post this up as he'll just get fraped by all the non-believers but as I went with him to collect it i'll tell you all about it 1st hand.

The deal was a straight swap, the Custard for the Type R.

On 1st impressions the Type R is a "reasonable" example. 1 owner since import, 115kms on the clock, import and owner history, plenty of mot/tax, reciepts for the alarm system and uprated fuel pump, all previous mots etc etc. I'm sure theres better out there and there may be worse. Its clean and straight apart from a small amount of rust on the passenger rear arch, apart from that it need a good compound polish and some stickers removing.

Engine wise, runs very smooth, idles nicely, oil is golden, slightly louder tappets than my MY00 and completely standard apart from the de-cat exhaust and fuel pump. It drives very well, pulls strong with minimal lag, no nasty rattles inside, no clunking suspension, all very promising.

Interior is very clean, no sagging/rips etc on the seats, plastics all in good nick, i/c spray working etc but it needs a good hoovering out.

Bad bits. Boot release doesnt work in the car, folding mirrors not working, the stereo only comes on when the headlights are on (must have been fitted by a muppet), the cel did come on a couple of times which could be the de-cat or something else so its going to Area52 for a full checkover asap.

DCCD makes it fun to drive thats for sure! damp+corners=lightning reactions! And having no abs caught him out too (should it have ABS?)

Overall, I think Jimmy has got an excellent starter car to build on. He's trying to get away from the lairy chavvy ones he's had in the past and go for more of an enthusiasts car. Plans are to do a facelift bumper/lights on the front and sti spoiler at the back, new wheels and tyres and the rear arch repair.

Power wise, its a 1996 so i'm not sure what the remap options are (ESL?) but I think he's thinking of adding a panel filter and map to get it around 300/300.

I wanted to post this as I'm one of the few who has met Jimmy and we chat on a regular basis. He's had a tough time this year and enjoying his car is an outlet for him. His personal circumstances mean that he DOES have a lot of money to spend on a car in patches and has had newer more expensive Impreza's etc in the past. He's learning as he goes along but rather than being impulsive and getting ripped off he's asking questions for advice.

End of the day, the car has gone to a good home as the previous owner was thinking of using it to rag around his field. The guy he swapped with had 10+ cars outside his house and was a trader and said he couldnt decide what to do with the custard, chances are it'll end up on Ebay or be his toy for a bit.

So there you have it, Jimmy has a Type R and will be spending money on it on the right parts and at the right places to make it a good un, personally I think he got a great deal and wish him well with it

If anyone has a facelift front bumper and sti rear spoiler in 230 White, crystal lights (headlights, fogs, sides etc), pillar pod or centre dash pod (replaces the vents) then PM jimmy with details.

It would be nice if we could keep the negative comments to a minimum on here, especially from those who dont know Jimmy personally.

Thanks Coleman, sounds like something Jimmy might be able to fix on his own!

Lol, he was a van trader mate, had a huge house with private land and about 8x 2007 reg ex-AA vans there. He buys 30 at a time apparently then sells them on. TBH, he didnt know what he was selling, or swapping for. He would have let Jimmy have it for £2500 but something stirred him about the Custard (must be all the yellow vans he has!) so it was a done deal. The Type R is no minter, but Jimmy still got a good deal.

I'd be interested to know what turbo they have as standard? I know its an IHI turbo but I couldnt see the markings on it to get the numbers. It drives much better than my VF35 with 300+ but that may also be down to the short ratio gearbox. Its super smooth and would be great with 300/300 to give it some extra oomph. Would be stunning round the Nurburgring thats for sure.

I'm not jealous, honest!

I think it was a Version 3? if so then it will be a VF23.

The coilpack is in the middle which makes me think its a V3 too. All I know is its a great set-up/turbo the Type R has, no wonder theyre sought after and admired.

If he adds a panel filter to the de-cat exhaust and fuel pump then gets it mapped what sort of power will the VF23 make?

Coilpack in the middle was also version 4's, it was the dash that changed on the V4. I removed the VF23 from my V3 RA and replaced it with a VF34....far better turbo...The mate i sold it to fitted it to a MY00 classic, JGM mapped it and it made 332bhp.

Duncan has just mapped a mates V3 RA via an ESL board with the VF23, it made 346bhp

Correct, Jimmy had his old 1997 car mapped by Duncan via ESL recently.

Jimmys has the old style dash and front bumper but facelift bonnet/grille. Its a P reg, september 1996 but iirc when they are imported they usually go back a year from manufacture

LMAO, i've just checked all the threads you've started in the last year and the majority are asking for help with your "dog" so unless you've got something productive to say then i'd stick to saving up yourself!

Nice enough guy but his posts don't help him. Engage brain before mouth.

Anyway I'm not quite perfect either so best of luck with the Type-r.

When I saw him today he wasnt sure what to do, based on how much he'd spent recently on the custard. I told him if he didnt swap his then i'd swap mine for the Type R (I nearly got a slap at that point).

He was grinning ear to ear on the way home, especially when we got a tad sideways round a corner and he literally filled his pants.

I think once the spring/summer comes and more people meet Jimmy they'll realise that he's a genuinely nice bloke thats just had a rough time in life and is trying to find happiness in an Impreza. Trust me, theres a lot of other cars he could afford, but he seems to be addicted to Classics

Normally a staight swap with a dealer means your swapping a good car for something not so good..
