Driven - Pile of old cack?
Look out Scoobysport etc.
Set to lose loads of business as people plump for the stereo exhaust note instead of the real one.
I bet the Nova/Corsa posse will be the first to plump for the "Scooby" exhaust note, to accompany their bonnet scoops.

And how is that different from tape recording your exhaust note and putting it on a web page????
Or putting different coloured wheels on????
Or all gathering around an exhaust pipe and saying - OOOOOOOOOOOOO WOWWWWWWWWIE????

I wonder if the stereo can disquise the sound of a cambelt snapping, a small child being run over etc! It's amazing what people can miss with todays cars, these sound like a disaster waiting to happen.
The tappets comment made me chuckle too!

Whilst I agree that Driven is absolutely excrement, I had thought of the "different engine note" idea some years back.
Not for me you understand ...
.. but I could see a market for both internal / external speakers to recreate a TVR Griff V8 sound from your slammed Nova 1.2 with a body kit, 22inch wheels and scooby bonnet scoop etc. Given the way emmisions/noise legislation is going I could see this being a realistic option to recreate "todays" sound in future models.
Equally, crippling fuel tax coupled with recent diesel developments could lead to an oil-sipping impreza with the current flat four sound.....anyone for 55mpg. Tune the boost to "mimic" petrol delivery and at 4000rpm deliver the noise of the petrol engine at 6000rpm etc. Who knows.....?
Its one of these ideas I dismissed as silly...who could use such a system and show their face in public?....then I saw those "headlamp shades" that look like you've got a twin lamp conversion (from a distance!), the fake discs for drum brakes etc. etc.....ever wish you'd developed and idea further?
Like Chiark, I'd read about the "antinoise" concept before. (Actually - the graphical concept representation of this on driven was excellent). I'm sure I read about it in "Fast Lane", so it must have been a few years back!
The downside? Cast your mind back to high school physics when you looked at interference patterns from two sources. If you overlap +ve and -ve sound patterns they dissapear...great! If you move your head 6 inches to the side however the wave patterns merge in-phase and double the volume...oouch!
We'll see........
yeah, the "Noise masking" was displayed on Tomorrow's world when I was knee high to a grasshopper.
People like to hear their cars. Who'd believe it, eh?

For performance testing, they drive a 3 litre BMW and 2.5 litre Volvo (or whatever) down a cobbled street at 15mph? Plato should be ashamed...
Still, I wonder how many people thought scuttle shake was something else... (sheepish grin)
