Hello all Ive just bought a wrx in june and am thinking of making a few mods to the engine. Does it matter what order i do things in? Can anyone advise me please as im new to this. Thanks.

 

Luckily, with a Subaru in particular there are a number of easy steps.
All it takes is a sport cat and a remap to gain around 40 bhp without hardly trying. The difference is well worth the cost (from around £700 all in) adding power and torque all the way up. A lot of people leave it there, thinking it's just fine, but the tuning bug can be hard to fight!
Don't fit an induction kit at this stage, dump valves make a noise and nothing else.
After that, you can get into larger turbos, larger flow injectors, front mount intercoolers, you name it if you want to.
Whatever you decide to do, you must allow for the cost of proper mapping at each level to get the best out of it.
It helps to run V Power fuel consistently if you can.

 

hi there im new to the scooby world myself but from what ive read one of the first things to do is to get rid on the cat in the up pipe becuase the cats break up and damage the turbo, which is true cause ive just removed my engine to do the heads on them and the cat was starting to break up.

 

Thanks Alan. The car already had a dump valve on it when I got it and I assume its an after market exhaust. Would you reccomend remapping before anything else then? I read on another thread that a K&N panel filter would be a good buy. Is a panel filter enough or do you reccommend an induction kit? Thanks

Level 1 if you are looking to unleash a bit more of the WRX........it was left pretty crippled from the factory to make sure it didn't step on the STi toes.

Panel filter is good for upto 400bhp, induction kits without cold air feeds do more harm than good!

 

sounds good midlife but how much for level 1 and how much for level 2?

Decent decat 2.5 or 3" system anything from £400 upwards. Hayward and Scott, Milltek, Revolution etc..
Panel filter K&N, Cosworth, Green Cotton £40
Walbro 255 fuel pump £90
Open source remap £350

Stage 2 add a VF35 around £250 to £350
Decatted up pipe around £40 for a used STI one.
STI 550 pink injectors £150 used.

Stage 1 will see 260- 270bhp
Stage 2 should see around 310-320bhp
At this stage the car should remain reliable, clutch and gearbox should cope fine.
Have you considered brakes and suspension too?

 

It depends what your budget is, I'm a bit thrifty so I have close relations with Subaru breakers, in my eyes let someone else pay full price, give it a a few miles, until the car blows up or crashes then pay a few quid for the mods!

 

There are a few different panel filters that are fine. We only fit induction kits when moving to front mounts or aiming over 400 bhp with large top mounts.

 

Have to admit I'm not exactly up to speed with all the technicalities so I apologise if I'm asking a stupid question but is a decat or sports decat exhaust road legal and will it pass mot as this is my everyday car.

There is no cat test in n/i at present, a decat exhaust if tunned right will pass mot no problem loads a guy passing here with decat be it mullusk boucher rd ect ect
