the power button is actually on the auto box models, you press the button on the side of the selector and the box changes to power mode,it then changes gear a lot faster,it does exist

Think the early auto WRX's were "only" 220bhp, later ones I'm not 100% on but doubtful 280bhp.

That's quite modest, most eBay Scoobys are 350+bhp with just a back box and an induction kit.

My classic wagon is automatic, it was totally std when i bought it and in std form they are rated @ 208hp. As forementioned they do indeed have a power mode which totally changes the way the gearbox operates (excellent bit of kit if you ask me), the auto's can also be used manually and come winter time they also have a hold function for specific gear holding from a standstill on ice and snow (puts any manual to shame especially on slopes). They also have the availability to manually lock the centre diff to 50/50 torque split, normally 45F/55R (impreza auto's have vtd centre diff). Obviously mine is no longer std and is quite modified under the bonnet and now produces 295hp/251lbft but if the car quoted by the op is std and unmodified then no way is it 280hp.

No seriously put it next to a manual on an uphill climb on ice and snow, you'll see what i mean. A lot of other scoob owners in my local club have argue'd this with me and the best way for me to show the difference is to do a side by side pull away, its because of the torque converter dellivers the power very consistently and smoother than a manual. Viscous couplings don't shudder or ****** like a direct drive manuall clutch, so the difference in traction between the two in bad weather is night and day.

+1 when you lock the centre diff by inserting a fuse under the bonnet ,it totally transforms the way the car drives in the snow .
Last week i completed my 4th td04 to td05 conversion for an auto wrx ,and with the 6K ecu, full decat with vortex ,walbro fuel pump, 440 injectors, & induction kit the car is pretty damn close to 300 bhp.
All classic auto's have the power button which allows you to remain in the gears longer before changing up,but i prefer to hold it in gear manually and change when i feel the need to change.

No worries just trying to put some info out showing some differences between the two types, not slagging manuals down at all as they have there advantages too.

I tell you what, its really suprising how much difference fitting a td05 makes. I am running a genuine cdb sti ra engine which i built with a td05h, 7k ecu, syms equal length headers (very expensive), hks (maff killer) ind kit, bailey dv, home made 3" straight through exhaust to rear silencer-cobra, walbro pump, sytec fuel filter (high flow). Still on the grey 380 injectors tho so its at its limit on power and the afr is getting close to dangerous, in the real world i need to get some 440's and an esl from jolly to make the most from it all but funds need to be replenished first (god i wish i was rich). I know exactly what you mean about holding it in gear, its easy to forget its auto + i love the pops and bangs on lift off and left foot braking is so much easier
