Simple Recession, nobody buying these cars in high volumes(due high fuel costs etc) and there is market in small cars with hybrid engines.
New EVO or Impreza STi/WRX will be have 1.6 turbo engines...

There is an untapped market for cars that leave the factory with low(ish) CO2, for tax reasons, albeit can be easily upgraded after that imho ... like the Evo 260. Best of both worlds then

Agreed on your points, but is big but,if company rather will develop new engine which will be in lower tax and CO2 band like Subaru/Mitsubishi thinking 1.6 turbo engine for US,UK markets in coming years, hope JDM version will like now 2.0L...
Don't see any reason why the move toward small capacity turbocharged engines shouldn't be made. The WRC are doing it (I seem to recall 300bhp from the Citroen DS3 being mentioned), and why shouldn't car makers look for more efficient ways of producing their power? Hybrids are also unavoidable, despite the obvious resistance. People seem to think they're saving the world with them for some reason.
