hey guys, cant afford to insure the turbo being 17 :P so thinking about one of these as Im not looking for speed but just somthing I can deck and put on some smart wheels to tide me over untill I can afford to go turdoo what are these like to drive? are they so slow theres no point in them, coz I know I said I dont care about speed but I want to sit at 70 with ease and not be constantly egging it on. So opinions on these guys much appreciated

 

Never drove a 1.6, i don't think there 4 wheel drive. Drove a 2.0 non turbo, can you stretch to one? You can get 2.0 gl not sure what insurance is like but think they got awd

 

The 1.6 will be great for a 17 year old. With the Impreza name the insurance might still be a bit high. The 2.0 NA is a great car but it's usually out of reach for most youngsters. With a lot of 1.6s being FWD means you won't get the horrendous power losses we see through AWD.

 

got quoted 1800 fully comp, so coz my dad uses the same car I do (corsa just now) he'll be the main driver so it will go down the 1.8 may also be an option, but the 2L is out my reach just now. tbh id consider putting in an awd system but then making it rwd :L

 

Yea in that case stick to 1.6. You going for standard looks or turbo replica?

 

Only experience i've had of a non-turbo Impreza was my mates old 2.0l gl Auto wagon. For an auto, and an N/A, the thing went VERY well.

The none Turbo 2.0 was my first Scooby and it was a great car, the 1.6 looks are lacking, but if you are willing to spend the money you can make it look great .. just don't race anyone

Oh don't buy a wagon

 

Why would you bother when there are better cars out there? No one buys Imprezas for their looks or their unrivalled interior quality, if you had a wheezy engine added into the mix, you've really got one seriously poor car that not even taxi drivers use.

When buying my first car 3years ago(still own it) I really wanted an impreza big style and checked out the 2.0N/A because I couldn't afford insurance on a turbo(still can't) and it just didn't make sense. I ended up buying an Alfa 147 1.6ts instead, just as quick as the 2.0N/A Impreza but a much nicer place to sit!

Until I can afford a JDM Impreza, I wont be joining the fold.

 

If you are the registered owner and your dad is down as main driver, the insurer is likely to think you are fronting and within it's right to throw out any claims.

As Jamz3k says though, a 1.6 Impreza will be a bit rubbish as a first car and if you decide to modify it with wheels and turbo cosmetics you are obliged to tell your insurer.

The insurance will revert to the highest risk (you) if you are the main or named driver.

 

Personally, having has the 2.0 sport (its NA with a body kit), I liked it, ok not quick but very capable car.

I've also driven the new 1.5 hatch (courtesy car), and that its what makes me say the above. The 1.5 was gutless and needed to be above 3k revs to do anything, then it did it slowly!

i had a n/a sport when i was 18 and loved it. so what if it only had 123bhp it still rumbles great and still handles well,still looks like a turbo with a few bits added. this tied me over till i was able to own/insure a wrx.

 

To be honest subaru should of got more power out of a 2.0 engine 123bhp from a 2.0 engine is poor. Would at least expect 150bhp

 

The problem with these turbo lookalikes is that it sort of defeats the purpose of buying the N/A version int he first place, as your insurance will go through the roof!

 

The best thing about a 1.6 is the difference in insurance, providing you can get insurance as some companies hear the word Impreza and don't want to know, better fuel ecomony is a bonus too and they don't need SUL but can run on it (as I found out by accident one day). The average person can't tell the difference between turbo's and non-turbo's so if you stick a few STI / WRX part's on it you can let on that it's better than what it actually is

cheers guys! it would be registered under my dad coz he'd use it more than me tbh, Im kinda getting ideas for my corsa (bad times) so im probs gna wait till im in my 20s and can insure my turdo although next year id love to do a turbo 1.6 rwd for a project but the insurance will just be stuped. Does anyone recon id be able to go under my dad on a 2.0 sport when I turn 18?:L
