Default Tightning Handbrake shoes???

Changed all my discs and pads today, 99 classic Impreza turbo... bit of an adventure, don't think they've ever been changed.

Anyway, I had to loosen the handbrake shoes to get the disc on. I see the gap at the back to twist that notchy thing to push the shoes back apart BUT HOW DO YOU DO THAT??

What tool or brain cells and I missing that means I have no idea how to do it?

Any help would nail it.

Cheers

Its easy with the right shaped tool (like a bent screwdriver as alcazar said). You can even do it without removing the wheels with the back jacked up and on stands with you lying underneath. Unless your posh and have a ramp handy
