Default Halfrauds 5w 50 motorsport oil

Just checked my oil this morning and suprisingly on the low level indicator.

Have just phoned my mechanic (john rasp) and he says when the last service was done he used 10w 50 motorsport oil of which they havn't any, but here is my question they have there own brand 5w 50 motorsport oil to be used on trackdays and enthusiastic driving.

Is this anygood at £34 for 5L not a bad price was just wondering if anyone else has experience of using this to give some advice.

my mate recommended this to me (he rallies his scoobs) and i decided against it just on the look of the bottle, i just wanted something to compare it to and could not find anything with the same viscosity. ended up with the 5w-30, which cost nearly twice as much in the end. if you give it a go let us know, i will probably give it a go next time.

just a bit shocked that it only had a service less than 1k ago and oil was as low as it was when i checked today.

I dont use the car alot as preparing it for the track this year just wondered where its all gone, i have an EJ25 fitted with alittle bit of spirited driving.

The 2.5 engine drinks oil. 1 ltr per 1000 miles is pretty much the norm.

I've used this for the last 2 years during the Autumn, Winter and springs months and have had no problems what so ever.

Though I will say when the summer months come along, I have changed to a thicker oil to keep the temps down abit as I do find the Halfords 5w 50 oil is abit thin and runs at a oil higher temp than Mobil 1 or Motul does in my engine.

My 2.5 doesn't use alot either.

Once it was run in, where it used about 2/3 of litre for 1500 running in miles and since then it's used less than a small mug full over the 5K it's done.

I have heard of some 2.5 drinking oil, 1 liter per 1000 miles

With regards to the oil, it will be fine, nothing wrong with it just because it's got halfords on the package. But that seems quite expensive when compared to silkolean/fachs. I've been using that for years now and normally pay around the £40 mark

halfords oil is usually made by castrol same as ford oil is too,,,,,,, oh and not buying a oil due to the packaging is not the correct way to buy oil

as for emailing oilman,,,,,,,,, i can tell you what his answer is gonna be,,,,, hes a salesman and he sells one type of oil because its not stocked at most places and so you order it off him,,,,,,,,,, he is officially the greatest oil salesman in the world,,,,,,,, JR has nothing on this chap infact i recon he could even sell silkolene to the arabs and prob does

ALWAYS change oil after trackdays and also remember that the cars are designed for 10w40 semi synthetic so they will burn thinner oil when driven hard

im currently using ford focus RS spec oil but thats aint the correct spec for a impreza but its 6 quid for 5 litres to me and has been fine for just over a year,,, before that it was valvolene which i found temps better and more pressure when up to temp but only just and little bit

i would never recomend a product that i have no knowlege off,,,,,,, hence i wont recomend anything pmsl

but im sure there are many people out there using it and the amount of cash there is in oil im sure they do 1 or 2 tests to see if it is spot,,,,,,,,, long gone are the days of purchasing duckhams oil that comes in a 5 litre paint tin

oil is light years apart and tbh semi synthetic is about to be taken off the market as most cars require a "hydrocracked" fully synthetic,,,,,,,,, which there is nothing wrong with for loads of performance cars before oilman confuses you to think its gonna kill your engine as we change it far too much to worry about that

I'd be happy to use the Halfords track oil in my car, and two friends have used it for a while in their cars (Impreza and Skyline) without any issues, including 3 track days.

remeber mr oilman is a salesman,,,,,, he is selling you a product that he orders from companys,,,,,,,, he dont actuall refine oil and it seems he ONLY recomends silkolene and recomends based on the oil spec supplied by the manufactures of the vehicle ( such as ford ect) so he basicall reads a guide and passes on infomation he has been given as sales tools from the oil companys to sell there products

halfords also has a oil specialist orn product manager who can also give you the information to help sell there oils

Yeah fair comment mate although i did not read it as i was being sold Fuch oils. I posted that link here cos i found the part of the article interesting about cheap mineral oils being legally branded as synthetic or even "race" oils because of a cheap synthetic additive Maybe the Halfords oil is good? as the article said , damage is long-term and not immediate in road cars. Wonder who makes the Halfords branded oil??

mate its not cheep synthetic addative,,,,,, its a synthetic way of making it,,,,,, another way and it works hence mobil 1 is a ****ing great oil if over priced

when my impreza was made the level of oil designs was alot less than it is in this day and age,,,,,, car engines with performance diesels require much higher thermals to deal with,,,,,, lucky that impreza engine designs are quite basic compared to the porsche flat 6 engines,,,,, that use mobil 1

if that makes sence

im sure the halfords stuff is fine,,,,,, its not like the 17 year old part time studant working at the till is refining the stuff and putting it in bottles like del boy in only fools and horses

Yeah, i would have bet money on it being castrol. Always swore by castrol And in regard to your post above, don't get me wrong, i was not implying all synthetic oils just have a cheap synthetic additive so they can brand it as synthetic. I was mearly pointing out that the article said some do and to be honest i believe it !. Agree mobile 1 is a great oil. I used to be a motorcycle mechanic and did engines re-builds on race bike's that used it. There was no wear at all on the engines i re-built that used it. Re-built for the hell of it most of the time ££$$
