Default n00b question: opening the bonnet!?

Sorry, you'll probably get a few of these whilst it's new to me thought I'd have my first look around my lovely blobeye engine today but after popping the open lever I'm stuck lol...

I can see the catch in the middle I've put my hands underneath and tried moving it left, right, up, down, forwards and backwards and it just won't budge!

What am I doing wrong here, hopefully something awfully simple you can all laugh at me about

Worked it out

On the subject of n00bness though, how full is the windscreen jet water meant to be? As mine's around a third full but it isn't spraying, do they have a tendency to clog up?

Are you pressing the button on the end of the stalk,as opposed to pulling the stalk towards you

As above, most Subaru's say "press to mist" but all this does is give the wipers a single full wipe of the screen, to clear any "mist" on the screen. To wash the screen you have to pull the stalk towards you.

I learnt this the hard way, before I brought a Subaru a friend had an Impreza Type R and said that the washer jets on the front didn't work but the rear did. So as a temporary fix I swapped the front and rear hoses over so when the rear washer was activated it sprayed the front and then he could activate the front wipers manually to clear it...not ideal but allowed him to clear the screen for the weekend so that he could get the parts the following week. After the work was complete I told him to try it and the front wipers went but the rear window was sprayed..Strange I thought, so I said try the front so he did and the rear wiper went but the front screen was sprayed which was as expected but even more strange...so both motors were working???? It turned out that the guy was pressing the button the whole time and as it wasn’t spraying the screen he thought it was broken when fact the front screen wash was fully functional...so I put it all back to how it was

Edit:

Just read this through and realised, got this asre about face...its pull to mist

anyway hopefully you get the drift and i've only had a couple of beers...must be the cold weather going to my head

That brings back memories Remember a couple of days after buying my car i went back to the dealer and had a go at him for selling me a car without working washers. He then pointed out that i needed to press the button in Ooops
