Default Air filter under open side vents???

Hi everyone. I am posting this on behalf of my cousin.

He has just bought himself a Classic 1996 pre facelift STi and it has 2 scoops on the 2 little side vents (on the bonnet). the scoops are obviously open and has a gap for the fresh air to get into the engine bay but he has a Pipercross induction kit right under the scoop. Is this ok when it rains?? my brothers old STi RA had the same mod and that seems to be fine but I just dont want him to suck water into the turbo and wreck his car.

Thanks

This was discussed a couple of months ago and there were differing opinions. I would imagine some classic owners and experts will let you know the definitive answer. Perhaps one of the tuners would Know?

They are not vents. When the backing plates are removed they actually draw air from the exhaust/turbo area which is very hot straight past the air filter which does not want hot air or indeed the water from above.

Taking the backing plates off actually causes a vacuum under them when at speed, causing more harm than good. Tell him to run a duct up to the filter from the bumper somewhere. Or imo, if he's still running the standard tmic, fit the standard airbox back on, much better than a pipercross filter.

thanks for the repies guys, The car comes like this so he will need to find parts to put the car back to normally. like the OEM covers for the side vent/scoops.

I will let him know that it's not actually doing any good. My main worry was about the water more than heatsoak tbh!

The original "vents" are just for show, if you look at them there is plastic underneath that takes rainwater away. I had them without the plastic for ages & it made no difference. I have [Trails did it ] put them back on since though.

TX.
