Question

I usually use NUL, but coming back from Sheffield on Sunday, I made the mistake of filling up with some Tesco stuff - and the scoob wasn't very happy about it!

I got back to Reading, and intended putting some SUL in the car "to make her better", but after trying 4 fairly large petrol stations I gave up and filled up with normal BP.

So, apart from trial and error, is there an easy way to find out which petrol stations have SUL? Any websites out there?

Pete

Cool

Pete,

I believe most Esso stations sell SUL (they do in the Midlands).

I only use Esso now as they are the only ones to have SUL at the majority of their branches.
BP station by me has the SUL pumps taped up since before Christmas.
ALLEGEDLY, you cannot get SUL in Newbury at all as it is deemed to be more hazardous in crash situations. Note, I did say allegedly.

I was thinking of trying SUL for a while, but if it's that difficult to get hold of then I'm not sure that I'll bother.

Offhand, I can't think of any Esso stations round my way, and their web site is no help!
I guess I'll just have to keep a look out for them.

Petrol stations are either owned by the brand they sell or are independent. I would guess that the brand concerned should have a group policy for it's own sites, but the independents can make up their own minds.

In my experence, most Shell sites sell SUL.

Esso stations usually stock SUL..

which doesn't really help you if there are none around..

The larger Elf , Texeco and BP seem to stock it but it does only seem to be Esso that have it at 99% of its stations.. IMHO...

Down here in the south most Sainsburys sell SUL, so it might apply to whole of UK, don't know.

Texaco seem to stock it, well down here they do.

I'm just starting to run the blackbeast on SUL, for past year it's been happy on NUL, but I think I'm going to stick with SUL from now on, unless I can't get it. Plus I might also get a Broquet thingy as well.

The BP garages around my way all sell SUL (Croydon area). BT52 - whatever the pump may say it will all be 97RON. You can't get 98RON anymore in the UK.

The Shell garage on Basingstoke Road, just before the M4 (opposite the Compaq building) sells SUL, and normaly has reasonable prices!

Most other garages heading into town _don't_ sell SUL (as i found to my cost during the September fuel crisis).

Thanks boomer, that Shell garage is reasonably convenient for me so I'll give it a go.

It may also be worth knowing that Shell petrol stations are found at Welcome Break motorway services....

PeteC,

popped into the Basigstoke Road garage today (Shell Fairfield) - SUL was 77.1p. Thats TEN PENCE per litre less than i paid at Cherwell Valley services only a week ago!

boomer,

At that price, I'll definitely give it a go. At the moment, I'm paying 73.5p a litre for NUL, so an average fill-up of SUL is not going to cost me any more than about £1.70 extra, if that.

As the car only gets used at weekends anyway, the extra cost is peanuts.

Thanks for your help and advice guys.

Pete
