I own a WRX-S and as youll prob have relised now im looking at an STI.

When you Hatch owners first bought your STIs, did any of you ever test drive the WRX-S, im not bothered about cornering, more the 0-100 rush.

How much Diff is it over my 260 BHP, ive had cars before with 40 and 70 BHP diff, and its been noticable but not massively.

I just wondered how it compares

330R is my current goal. is it a big diff, come on i need convincing :P

and before any body says to me agin ENGINE FAILURE lol dont, Ive spoken to Adrian Mike and Phil at IM, ive also spoken to 4 dealers and the service managers from scotland to lanchashire to local to me, and i now have the lay of the land on the engine issue. PM me if you need to chat about it

Mine's ok.... did 22k on the original 2008 map, then 4k on the neutered map... and now another 4 on the RaceDynamix map...

and to answer your question, the +50odd BHP I now have over the standard STI map was and is quite noticeable

Having been a previous WRX owner, i always regretted not spending the extra and just getting the STI.

The STI is of course uprated, stronger, more durable ............sorry it would be wrong of me to go on.

Good luck with whatever you decide on, it's always a great time leading up to the collection of a new car and i hope the new car ticks all the boxes for you.

I had an 06 WRX previously, the STI is certainly quicker and a much better car allround, when I first drove the STI I was amazed at how quick it was, now though I'm used to it!

I chose the STI this time round on looks more than than the extra power, had the WRX been available in wide body I may have gone for that with ppp.

i had a 55 plate wrx with ppp quick nice car but now have a 57 plate sti with ppp completely different beast in every way can be subtle burbling along like a lamb then wham floor it and all hell lets loose there really is a big difference belive me...

An Ecutek remapped WRX-S with no other mods gives 270 bhp and 315 lbft.
Weighing 110 kilo less than the STi hatch, this should just about tip the scales in the 0-100 dash, (13.1 against 13.4 secs. according to Torquestats)

Paul its currently mapped by prodrive to 255ps or 260bhp, when you say ECUTEK whats that, sorry noob at all this.

The factory WRX-S is rated 255PS, equivalent to 251BHP, and has 288 lbft of torque coming in as low as 3000 rpm. Prodrive were instructed by Subaru not to give the WRX-S the full works as far as the remap was concerned so as not to make it faster than the heavier and £7k more expensive flagship Sti. Ecutek is a brand name for the software used to remap Subaru cars. I know an owner of a WRX-S who has had it remapped to the figures previously quoted in my previous post which makes it a fast, if not faster than the STi at speeds below which if caught, you do not face the possiblity of a custodial sentence.

I had a MY06 WRX PPP previously (so 270bhp and 310lb/ft) and loved it, but people that just look at numbers when comparing a PPP or remapped WRX against an STi are missing a whole lot of things.... better brakes, stronger 6 speed gearbox, diffs, more tuning potential given the bigger turbo, far far better intercooler etc etc. You could go on and on and one of the biggest factors for me when i bought my STi hatch was the looks.

The WRX is a nice car but i'm sure you wouldn't regret moving to an STi.

No "quick chip" solution...only re-maps

Where you based?

JGM (ecutek) & Duncan at Dynamix (open source) are mobile mappers that cover most of the UK

Bob Rawle (ecutek) now maps the 08> cars and is based in Swindon

The thing I never understood with the hatch WRX was the 130mph top speed, flat out diesel Mondeo's etc. would be comfortably passing you..

Is this restricted by gearing or can it be increased by remapping?

mapping will not increase the top end...it'll just reduce the time it takes to get there..

Must be a gearing choice to keep the lower powered car feeling more responsive in top gear.

The reality is that the WRX or WRX-S would be so far ahead of the Mondeo deisel by the time they reached 100 mph (about 10 seconds worth of road) that top speeds become irrelevant. Having said that, the WRX-s will pull to 6300 in fifth, equivalent to 143 mph. A slower accelerating car with a claimed higher top speed needs about three miles of road to get there.

My Civic Diesel would show a WRX-S a clean pair of heels in everyday driving (the 40-60 Overtaking Zone) ..... an STi would keep up marginally, so, maybe it's worth the swap - but, why not go for Luxury, Economy and Power ..... get a Honda Diesel

I took the WRX-S out and the STi, earlier this year ... the STi was more 'planted' - both were fast.

But, seriously, there are better cars out there nowadays .... sadly

I never understood the claimed top speed of the wrx, wrx-s hatch. My bugeye 2002 wrx had a claimed top speed of 141 (from memory) with less power. Are the new cars restricted? It didn't mention restricted on the web site (the sti and cs400 does)

At 130 mph in 5th gear at 22.7mph per 1000rpm, the WRX-s is pulling 5700 rpm. The limiter cuts in at 6500 rpm. I know for certain that the engine is capable of pulling at least 6300rpm in 5th at that gear ratio. The car is not limited to 130mph.

So that's 143 according to my calculator! I thought Subaru were possibly understating the performance to try and keep the insurance premiums down! 140 sounds more like it with the power levels the car has.
