COOLANT LEAK FROM THERMOSTAT HOUSING?
HI GUYS, sorry if posted in wrong place but need urgent asistance
as a few may know bought this impreza wrx at auction, first thoughts have pointed me to the headgasket, but after reading alot on here just want to be sure.
refilled system, waited till warm then noticed a puddle under car, looked underneath while running and leaking from what i can see is the thermostat housing>is this possible? a couple of pics >
the coolant looks like its coming from here.
also saw this
looks a bit bodged to me, if it headgasket would the water come out from here??
any advice would be grateful in advance. will check back later as have to go out for a while.
regards sean.

No if the head had gone it would boil and come out of the filler cap on the over flow tank. But running it with a leak WILL cause it to boil as it isn't no longer pressurized. Fix the leak then see if the temp guage goes up. Or if the tank in the corner fills up/ over flows etc.

cheers curtis, also because of this leak would that cause the bubbling in the header tank? put the cap back on and it bubbles in the overflow. plus the top rad hose hot and the bottom one is cold.
get full heat out the fans too.
no mixture of oil in water or vice verser
no white smoke from exhaust when cold/hot.

Get underneath its two bolts to take the housing off mate. Yes it could cause iot to bubble, the only reason it won't is because its a sealed pressurized system. A leak determines that. Fix the leak, Then refill with coolant and water, wait until ALL radiator is warm and bottom hose, replace cap, wait until fans kick in, whole time have heaters on full. Should be ok.

Looks like the gasket between water pump and block though mate... if so its cam belt off job and gasket sealant. Did a job for someone last Sunday with same problem, only thing is didn't quite cure it as no sealant :\.

hi curtis thanks for the advice, started to remove things to get at the water pump but now have hit a stumbling block!! cant think how to get the pulleys off!! main one being the crank pulley?
how the bejesus do you get that off, key being here to remove the middle timing belt cover.

ok got it all apart!! was leaking side of water pump, the gasket corroded a bit.
ordered new waterpump because the one taken out sounds like the bearings are nearly shot. new gasket on its way too. inspected the cam belt and there are two cracks in it within an inch apart!!! could be a blessing in disguise because if the timing belt snapped would of scrapped it lol..

out of curiosity did you fix it??? i had the same thing happen but because the bearings on the pump sounded a bit loose i replaced it, only 45 quid from ggr via ebay.
the thing is there is a channel that flows through the pump,my mate reckons it is an overflow in case the gasket between bearings and wheel leaks so instead of pissing out by the pulleys and belt it directs it to the back of the pump, i dont know but my gasket looked ok so i played safe
