Default Upgrade my gearbox yet???????

Hi everyone!!

Just a quick question...
My car is currently running 307bhp atm (due to be remapped following bigger injectors etc on wednesday) so i am now wondering at what point i am going to need to upgrade my gearbox to either a stronger 5speed or possibly 6??

I drive like a grandad 99% of the time in all honesty guys, so roughly at what power could i take my car to where at which point it would be Very likely that my gearbox would go?????

Kind Regards
Andy

Hi, i would just leave it be untill the need arises. I have been running 349ftlb though mine for the past 18 months and has, still is fine.
By all means swap the box if you have the cash lying round but i would wait for it to break or become to noisy. Then you have the dilema of a 5 speed gear kit or the heavier 6 speed box. The choice is yours

in all honesty bud i really couldnt tell you??

i do know that when it had the new engine put in (approx 2years ago) i also have a receipt for a new STI clutch and STI gearbox with diff fitted at the same time??? Shes done under 4000miles since then too!

is it hard to actually see the code on the box mate?? can it be seen without removing things or not???

Regards
Andy

You can see the gearbox code from the engine bay It's on the right hand side of the box near the starter motor and it's on a label stuck on the side.

You shouldn't need to worry about an uprated box until you get past 350/350 but I would just wait until it breaks and then replace it

thanks bud!
yes i agree theres no point in changing it untill/IF it goes bang!!??
I guess i just wondered what the likleyhood of it doing just that would be once the bhp starts rising thats all??? But in your opinion 350 is a safe benchmark (driving dependant of course!) anyway right??

the only problem i see with that is once i reach the 350... at the back of my mind ill no doubt be thinking -

"il just make it up to 400bhp, should be okay at that if i drive sensibly!!!!

Hi, running 350hp up untill it blew (piston ring lands). Just waiting for my stroker to be finished and it will be going back in with one of Harvey's 20g's. Hopefully it will still hang in there but i am fully aware its going to go pop at some point. Mine is one the stronger of the five speeds TY54 in a newage.

just buy a TY754 gearbox (usually around 400 quid) and leave it in your shed/garage as a back up if your one goes boom, not a massive job to change the boxes out for a garage.

If you have a TY752 gearbox the sticker for which is on the bell housing and can be seen with the bonnet up as described above, then you are likely to break this at some point and the TY754 gearbox is stronger but you have to ensure before you do anything else that the TY754 gearbox matches your rear diff or buy a gearbox and rear diff as a set.

I should have pointed out what Harvey just said, If you buy a back up box you need to make sure it's a direct fit for your diff.
