it really depends on how much power your looking really and the state of tune that your car is already at,as stated above the subaru airbox and a uprated filter does fine but has limitations at certain bhp levels i would say the subaru set up is good for 400 plus brake depending on which model subaru you have.

i have a pipercross panel in my 02 wrx , but the colder the air the better on impreza,s, so cant go wrong with aem cold air ! apparently gives 15+bhp gain on standard sti !!

keep with the standard air box and get a k+n panel filter and you cant go wrong, unless or upping the bhp in a big way. i would stick to the standard coz at the end of the day subaru didnt spend all that ££££££££££ on engineering and designing+testing for nothing

OEM airbox its good to 400BHP,but if you have FMIC OEM airbox its useless(doesn't fit,due extra pipework of FMIC),due this i have HKS Suction Kit.

As a crude rule of thumb

Standard airbox is best - with a K&N green

Unless you have a front mount
Unless you run a MAFless set up
Unless you run reasonably big power

Then K&N cone filter with trumpet

Don't get taken in by glossy advertising because as far as a Subaru WRX/STi is concerned this is a load of bollocks.

The Classic airbox MY97-00 is generally good to 350 bhp and the New Age is good for a bit more on top of that.
Do not go for a cone until you exceed these figures unless you have to because you have fitted an FMIC.
There is nothing wrong with the OE cardboard filter other than it is clogging up part way through its service life. Whether you run the OE cardboard filter, K+N panel, STi panel or similar, the power output will be to within 1 or 2 bhp regardless of what filter you use.
If you go to a cold air kit such as K+N you need your MAF rescaling as a minimum otherwise you stand the very real risk of serious engine damage. The cone on the end of the APS CAK is rated at 309 bhp by K+N themselves.
Like I said, don't be taken in by advertising bollocks claiming 5 or 10 bhp more from "improved" induction on a WRX or STi Classic or New Age.

This is the issue i am having fitting my FMIC to my 1999 awd 2000 turbo, the opposite side fits fine but the air box is in the way for the pipework on other side! what would be the best filter or way to get around this, thanks for any answers in advance.

15bhp..... LOL.

If only it was that easy, don't believe what the people selling the item tell you. Everybody 'bigs' their own products up for a sale.

RCM are good, but at nearly £200 it's a bit steep for most, especially when in reality it's just a £40 KandN filter with a fancy trumpet.

I,ve had the HKS Mushroom kit taken off.

Powerstation said, standard box, green filter.

367 on a Jap STI Forester.

So not too bad although, its just got a bigger down pipe so time for a remap.

Think i might casually go in the garage and find the standard air box. Then go and remove and replace the £10 ebay special cone that's currently destroying my engine.... I've got so many wrongs going on i don't know how the thing even moved

Did you not have it mapped for the modifications? i fail to see how a filter can cause engine failure otherwise

Going to say, ran HKS on skyline and other cars for years with no issues at all. All mapped for it of course

Went for the Pro R panel filter to replace Powertec induction kit, so pleased, car has much more pull/power, difference is very noticeable, standard air intake is so much better, just wonder why do people mess about fitting induction systems when clearly it just doesn't suit the car at all!
