Post HEADACHE WITH GARAGE CHIMPS!

So, long story short...

Bought car. After getting to know it on the daily drive notice a knocking from the rear, an occassional 'sticking' feeling from rear when moving off... my thoughts = the traditional Subaru knocking shocks.

Took car to a garage, mechanics confirm both rear shocks need replacing.

Car goes back to place I bought it, they get their mechanics to look over it, claim nothing wrong with rear shocks.

So we have a deadlock: I say they're broken, garage say they aren't.

What I want to know is what visible signs are there of knocking rear shocks? Basically if I'm stood under the car with the mechanics, what could I point at to say "see? That means it's broke you w**ksplash"?

If by any chance anyone happens to have pics of a knocking shock that would demonstrate what a broken one looks like that would be very handy - don't know if anyone is likely to have that though!

Appreciate any help you can offer on this one guys.

Thanks Myles, that helps me understand why they're making the noise.

Annoyingly then it looks like there aren't necessarily any visual symptoms of a knocking shock from the outside?
