Default ECU help for a dummy

Hi all, sorry to sound stupid, but i'm getting very confused with the whole Scooby ECU side of things.

My previous car, a 1.8T Golf Mk4 underwent a number of tweeks to the ECU and gained fantastic power and driveability.

Now, being a Scooby owner, things seem a little more complex. There seems to be a number of after market replacement options, and i'm not entirely sure what I have, but more importantly, what I need.

Am I right in thinking that an EcuTek map is a map of the standard ECU? How does this compare to the other ECU options out there?

Why do you need a different ECU when the standard one can be mapped? If you can change the same parameters, can't you achieve the same things?

My car has paperwork to show an EcuTek tek3 map by API. Does anyone have any more information on this map and what kind of things it should be doing?

Thanks all for any help you can offer on this. I'm really confused!

I assume you have a Newage Scoob then?

What year and what version (STi?), UK or JAP?

Sorry, yes. Bugeye. 2001.

Neither Jap nor UK, it's actually Australian!

I'm still trying to confirm if it's an STi or a WRX with lots of STi bits on it

Is there an easy way to tell?

I have RR paperwork to show 280 BHP before the engine rebuild and remap, so not sure!

You could check the chassis / model code... looking at bits fitted would always depend on what has actually been swapped.

The standard ECU's reprogrammed via ECUTEK are very good. Dependant on year (the later the better), some extra functions maybe available via ECUTEK (Launch Control, Dual Maps etc). Unless you are going for a wild conversion, then I suspect your current ECU, reprogrammed via ECUTEK will be fine. Whatever your goals are, discuss them with one of the many mappers on this site.

What Shaun said.

Api will have remapped the ecu to match the mods on the car at the time.
