Question

Want to get into trackdays but not keen to risk my scooby just yet. My local paper regularly has old MK2 GTIs etc for sale and just wondered if any of these would make a decent novice trackday car? I think a good choice would be something like a 106 Rallye but I don't suppose there's many of those about...

Any ideas on a decent "starter" marque to go for?

A 106 Rallye would be an excellent choice as they handle superbly, but they are quite rare. There were more mk1's (1.3 engine) then there were mk2's (1.6 engine), but both were only made in limited numbers.

Why not an old Pug 205 GTi?!

You could pick one of them up for peanuts now. The 1.9 is still a very quick little car.

I've actually got an old R5 GT Turbo for playing on tracks or doing hill climbs with, that I acquired cheaply. It's all stripped with race seats & harnesses, uprated clutch & brakes, SS exhaust, dump valve and running more boost, etc.... Goes like stink and cost me b*gger all really, so if I stuff it, no probs.

There are loads of things you could get.
