Great driving roads in Yorkshire - Suggestions ?
#1
Got a few days off next week, so looking for some suggestions for interesting routes with little traffic.
Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors sort of area.
Also, any ideas for somewhere good to stay ? (quiet areas, good food, beer, etc).
Can anyone help ?
TIA

I stayed in the Yorkshire Dales last summer.
Have a look in the back of True Grip, there is a place in Richmond which is very nice, just on the edge of the Dales and gives a 10% discount to SIDC members. I'll look up his details tonight?
The owner Trevor has a very nice scoob and is a real petrol head... !
The roads around there are Great, i'll have a look at the map tonight and see which roads we drove? (Buttertubs Pass, Etc)

The Stokesly to Helmsley (not sure on the spelling) is fantastic for a blast.
I used to go down there with some mates on motorbikes - plenty of hills, bends, straights etc...(why did I moove south???)
Enjoy the drive,

Otley to Pateley Bridge on B6451
Pateley Bridge to Threshfield B6265
Threshfield to Aysgarth on B6160
Left on A684 to Hawes
Left at Hawes onto B6255 to Ribblehead viaduct
Left towards Horton in Ribblesdale on B6479 and then onto Settle
From Settle get on A65 and go back to wherever you started.
Be careful and watch for sheep !
Chris.

Id give this one a miss if i were u
great road but recent bad publicity and bike fatalities means it is usually crawling with
the filth, cameras etc especially on sunny weekends.
The day i picked up my car from Bentleys in Knaresborough i had the pleasure of driving to the Lake district via Ripon, Hawes,Brough
fantastic quite roads paticularly the Hawes/ Brough in the wet,Even though i was running in it was agood introduction to the cars capabilities>

Do the run Chris mentions, I've done the Otley to Threshfield bit and it's fappin briliant!!
You can't go wrong in the dales, there are some briliant roads and even if you do get stuck behind something there's plenty to look at!
Malham is worth a look, the cove is quite impressive though it does mean getting out of the car, your bread knife will like it I expect!
The run up to Kendal is quite good too, I can't remember the road no. though!
I hope you have fun, enjoy the dales!
Bob, Skipton, gateway to the dales! Well thats what it says on the sign post!

'nother vote for the Otley->Patley bridge and beyond route. If I'm looking for an excuse to drive somewhere (dry the car after washing, charge the batteries up, just nipping to the video shop via the scenic route), I normally charge out that way.
Lots of fun, but its well known as a good route so watch your speed. Also, always anticipate cyclists over the brow of the hill!
For a stay, why not plan a tour?
Nick.

Pickering to Whitby is a must - particularly the stretch after the Saltersgate Inn. Great visability, excellent surface, nice straight bits and interesting bends. Don't do it on a Sunday though... too many tourists and police (stalking bikers).

Go for the roads around Rosedale abbey. I was there aged 17 (10 years ago )with Dales (Scoobynet lad, not the place), and we had a scream.
Open moor roads with lots of dips and bends but you can see for miles so full racing lines. Excellent. Look on a map from Rosedale to Pickering, and Rosedale to Whitby.

A day trip to Bolton Abbey while you're up here is worthwhile too... Again, top roads around there. If you like walking, I can recommend a few rambles if you're interested. Not quite what you asked for, but part of the "Yorkshire" experience.

Couple of Short Ones...
Find Reeth on the map.
Go left along swaledale to muker.
Go south along the buttertubs pass road.
Also look at Low Row in Swaledale.
Take the roads almost directly north through to Barnard Castle.
Awsome....

Snow, foot and mouth, train crash ...
Can anyone on this board in the Dales/NYM tell me what's happening up there at the moment ?
Are the roads open for driving?

Russell,
If you can fit a lower lip on your front spoiler and get it to act like a Snow Plough you 'll be o.k.
I live slightly more north than the area your thinking of visiting and there's about 3" - 5" of snow further inland on the hills.
