If the car has been well maintained then there is no reason for it to have a rebuild.
MY99/00 cars suffered a bit with the 100 ron fuel and fragile maf sensors, this is why you see lots of P1's with engine rebuilds, but if looked after and take all the right precautions (monitoring engine det etc) then there should be no issues

Good question. Why didn't you ask all these people telling you it'll need a rebuild at 50k why it would be necessary?

and is there anything i can do to avoid this
Stop listening to "everyone", whoever they are, as by the sound of things you've swallowed a crock of scaremongering bullsh*t. Tony's advice is sound.

Use Shells V-Power, no need for octane booster.

When going through my paperwork after buying the type R i found it had blown 2 standard engines before the present built one was put in.
But have no info as to why this happened.

I thought the problem was said to be oil starvation at the crank? Does anyone know if this is right or wrong?

It can need rebuilding for a number of reasons, mine picked up on a shell but kept going for quite a while. Oil pumps can cause failures but there is no definitive answer, too many variables.

My V5 STi is almost at 100k, I bought it with 93K fully documented miles on the clock. It had a £3.5k rebuild at 86k, I have the list of parts etc that where replaced but there is no specific reason in the history.

This was one of the reasons I bought it and the huge history it came with.

Again, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Get it, enjoy it and look after it

as long as it's been well maintained it'll be sound, its only the one's that have been thrashed to an inch of there life that'll go.

That is not true. Infact that is low mileage. Its the RX-7s that fall in that category

That again is not exactly true, it again depends how you drive them. When I had my Rex I knew of people with cars with nearly 100k (miles) without a rebuild, but the others that have blown the in less than 20k.
