Just about to change from Optimax to Optimax & Millers Octane Booster (tonight ). Given the step increase going from 95RON to Optimax, it should be noticeable... (best bet is to monitor boost, though it was the top end that really improved with Optimax rather than normal SUL).

Cheers

I have just put in a tankfull of optimax for the first time.Engine seems to pick up better with a noticable improvement in acceleration and smothness. Shell claim it will get better with time as optimax cleans the engine. Next tankful I will use octane booster as well and let you know

Interestingly, I filled up with one bottle of Millers followed by a tankful (50l anyway) of Optimax. Immediately, maximum boost has gone down to 15-16psi It used to be 17psi! Could just be the warmer weather (15C) I suppose... Seems quieter too which is weird...

More to follow as the ECU gets used to having 100.6RON fuel (Optimax is 98.6 and one Millers Plus is 2RON, CVL is 3RON)...

Cheers

I would say that your figures are out, you will be very lucky if the Optimax plus millers is over 100 RON.

Optimax is only gaurenteed 96.0 and Millers actually giving 2 RON is very slim.

These are not my words either but words of the manufacturers

Considering SUL is 97RON I somehow doubt Optimax is lower, considering it's advertised as better. If you feel like not believing me I point your uninformed self here to find this:

What is the Octane level of Shell Optimax?

Shell Optimax has the highest octane specification of any petrol in the UK. It is greater than 98 Research Octane Number (RON).
So yes, optimax + whatever booster gives you 2 RON would put you over 100RON

As Optimax might not give you 98.6 and millers might not give you 2 RON, i would be very uncertain to weather it gives 100 to be honest.

Anywhoo its the MON rating that gives you BHP and thats the same as SUL

Also from the shell site....looks like a BS redex advert.

2 different valves, one old one new.

All that from petrol, mmmmmmm OK then, ala Ace Ventura.

I didn't say 98.6, but if shell were selling it and it was below 98 then they would be mis-advertising and I'm sure someone would point trading standards in their direction (usually a competitor), which means either they'd lose that statement from their site or they would rectify the problem.

Again, if their claims could be proved to be fraudulent, and I don't doubt they've been thoroughly tested by their competitiors, they would be in breach of trading standards.

Yeah but its minimum is only 98 and max is 98.6.

I have had SUL tested and it was under 97.

Just because it says its 98.6 doesn't always mean it is.

Hey i don't work for Esso

The nearest I come to esso is when I buy SUL from then on the occasion when my local shell garage is out of optimax, seems to be pretty popular.

Remember guys, its diminishing returns, whichever OB you use. If an OB claims a 2Ron increase from 95 to 97, it won't take 98.6 to 100.6 for example.

BTW NF and Optimax in my car and its never felt better

Dingy cheers mate, next day delivery as promised

No problems.

At last someone who understands RON increases

NF @ 1mls per litre will take Optimax to over 100RON no matter what the base RON level is. 98-98.6

Dingy is right

Just cos it says 98.6 dont mean its guaranteed that. I get quite large variations on each fill up - as determined by my knocklink.

The stuff is crap up North, and great down south - generalisationm but true in my case.

2 RON on Millers would be absolute max I reckon

I dont think using Millers with UL is the same as SUL - if I ever use UL as an emergency it dont matter how much Octane Booster I put in - the Knocklink goes berseerk. Wonder why - must get past a threshold and the ECU doesnt like it

Dingy - whats the guareteed Ron/Mon increase with this NF stuff, how much is it - and whats the differencee between Mon and Ron - I know they dont give a toss about Ron ratings in the States and keep going on about Mon - especially at high revs - but I aint ever thought about what exactly the Mon meant?....

If the MON rating is the same between SUL and Optimax, then how come I get the power tailing off above 6300rpm on SUL, but held flat to 6800rpm on Optimax? This was the only difference between the dyno runs (max power within 1bhp each time).

MON is Top end of the REV range and RON is bottem end of the REV range.

Not sure why it Revs better on Optimax, in theory is should be the same, i know engines mapped on the dyno don't gain in top end bhp when using Optimax over SUL, but give a little more bottem end torque.

Have been using millers for about a 18months and optimax when I can get it.I spoke to the guys from millers at the NEC motorshow and they said that used in conjunction with optimax and to their rec.mix the octane rating would be about 99.5.You can add more to increase the rating but the chemicals in the O/B can then start to clog things up so not really reccomended.I also asked why they don't do bigger bottles and they replied that once the bottle is opened it must be used pretty much straight away and not left open or in direct sunlight and as the bottle does a tank there was no point in making a bigger one.

Used to run my STI on Optimax, just added NF to the Optimax as recomended, no obvious increse in power but I am sure the car is smoother & quieter, can this be true or is it just an impresion I am getting
NF available through the post & next day delivery as promised. The only awkward bit is measuring it out, anybody got any clever ideas, can anybody recomend any callibrated bottles you could empty the stuff into making it easier to measure out in the garage.

I've been using Optimax and NF for a bout a month now and i'd say the car definately feels a lot better (MY93 WRX). It seems a lot smoother, especially when in the mornin' when the engine is cold. Its well worth it.

Stuart, at first it was a nigthmare gettin the bloody NF in the tank without it gettin' everywhere. I've got a great little idea now tho, i borrowed the little shampoo bottles from a hotel (30ml) and filled these up with NF. I put one in before i put £20 of Optimax in, that's about 26 litres so it works out at just over 1ml per litre.

Hope that helps,

Tony.

I have just started using Optimax on a 6 month old MY01 .

Whatever anyone will say about this RON & that RON it does "feel" more responsive & the run to/from work is more "FUN" ..

Its worth the extra few quid per fillup !!!

Tony,
thanks for the idea, its obviously "Head & shoulders" obove any other ideas ive had to date.

One other question which somebody may be able to answer. If you use octane booster does this have any noticable effect on exhaust emissions, im not that worried apart from when its MOT time, just curious

Quick Reply: optimax SUL or UL +octane Booster
