Cool BEWARE! Noob asking noob questions inside

Good evening to all

I have recently been bitten by the bug that is the Impreza and I had a thousand questions which most have been answered thanks to searching around this site

I now know that the model I like is the 'blob eye' and that there are far too many different models to choose from lol....

I have been quoted happy on a base spec 2003 turbo and was wondering if this year has the blob eye or bug eye? Also, is it worth going that penny further for the STi? or would a base spec be a good starting point to build a decent car from?

Also, I have read that it is not to hard to change a bug eye to a blob eye but 1 detail I am unable to find out... with the cross bar at the front, does that need to be spot welded into place or is it a bolted item? I know it needs to be spot welded if its a hawk eye but need more info!

Lastly, I have found that leaving the intake standard (save for a better panel filter) and the I/C the same is better for sub 350bhp figures.... but what steps are the most sensible (not that modding a car is all that sensible lol) to reach these sort of figures?

I'm sure I'll have loads of questions to further make me look like the annoying drunk at a wedding!

BTW, hiya and great site lol!

The 03 is a Blobeye. An STi would be the way forward. Add a decent flat panel air filter, Snorkus delete mod and a 2.5" or 3" turbo back decat system and you're away once you've had it remapped. 350bhp all day long.

Thanks for that, you make it sounds easy to get 350bhp from these cars! lol

I noticed the JDM have a much better spec than the UK models, but the insurance hike is huge!

Are A-plan any good with quotes for the under 30's? lol

dont bother with the comparison websites for quotes mate try a stand alone insurer you'll be surprised at how much the quotes differ

Honestly on a newage Subaru STi it's that easy. Just get the right physical mods done and the remapper does the rest. Just bolting the bits on with no remap will get you next to bugger all gains and the car may run rough depnding on your mods so you need the remap to stitch it all together.

The only limitation you will have is the depth of your pockets!!

Still disagree with that snorkus mod Francis. No noticeable gain in my back to back tests. Bit of extra noise but that is it.

Anyway back to topic...

A full decat exhaust system, walbro 255 fuel pump, panel filter and it will be ready for mapping. Your chosen mapper will get the best performance from it that he can and is safe to do so. This can vary as all imprezas are individual, even those with identical mods will not perform the same or produce the same figures. it is what makes it fun to map them and why some of them surprise you.

Enjoy - the STi is a great base to work from.

Wow thanks for the detailed replies

I will have a look into this Snorkus mod and see what it's all about, that way I can make my own choice as I have heard 2 sides of the story... and that is exactly what I am after What I wouldn't want to do is any mods that take performance away, if it just adds a bit of fun noise then thats fine

I get the feeling that an STi is the way forward! I will be aiming for a Blob eye WRX Sti UK MY03 but not a clue on the average prices or mileage etc or even what to look for in the way of wear/issues.

I will enjoy the replies to this part...... how many came with a sunroof?

for an 03 sti type uk if it has book milage ( 12k a year) it'll be between 7.5-10k depending on seller and specs.

I have a 2003 wrx and the sti vs wrx debate is well covered on scoobynet. This is a good thread if you are thinking of modding it https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...ml#post9141380

It's certainly better to get an sti if you're looking for 330 and above - less than that and it is less clear cut ( especially if you have a limited budget)

ok, some sound advice in this thread!

I had a good look at that thread ahar, nice read

I bet I would regret not getting an STi...

How viable would it be to get a bug eye and then swap the front end to a blob eye?

I know what parts are needed, but is there any welding involved or is it all bolt on bolt off?

Also, what are the major and minor differences between the bug STi and blob STi? Performance, spec etc
