TBH I do not mind IB carrying out system maintenance but I do find your answer and attitude shocking.

I think the point that is being made is that would you have your local tv transmitter taken off air during corrie or eastenders when you have the most people watching? And I bet the answer is no
IB should accommodate its regions better tbh, if essential maintenance is needed, then it should be done in "our" out of hours and not our peak time as the main users are uk based.

What kind of professional response is that?

As a sysadmin, i work stupid hours when i need to to ensure that my customers have the applications available to them when they need them.

IB decided to buy into a predominantly UK based forum - so they should schedule maintenance that fits our usage activity. Even if that means working at midnight to do so!

Friday night IS the quietest time on this and indeed most UK forums guys. That is my point.
We are talking about an internet webforum offline for a couple of hours here, not some mission critical business application server, lets keep things in perspective shall we? The database work required many hours of post upgrade testing which means it had to be done at start of business not end, otherwise it would have to be done next week instead but Mon - Thur is significantly busier than friday.

I'm sure if your original response had provided similar information instead of appearing to snipe at your user base said users would have reacted more positively.

Notification of outages is a good way of managing users expectations but I'm sure IB know that already

Correct, but internet webforums are your business, and therefore such a relaxed attitude and approach suggests you have no decent sense of customer service or priorities!

If my job was a milkman, i couldn't skip a days deliveries and just say "well, its only a pint of milk, its not that important.....".

To be blunt, do your job!

A simple PM or planned maintenance message banner would sufice, it's common courtesy

Why are you testing upgrades on a live system in the first place, can't you test on a virtual machine then patch the live system when your happy with the VM test?

Do you trot out that moronic stuff to yourself in every non life or death situation when you've been let down with something, especially something you've financially contributed to? I suspect not.

As above, even a notification that work was to be done/work was ongoing would have been nice, or is this a path back to the old Webmaster attitude
