I learned to drive in my mums 309 GTi!! Inusrance was cheaper then than it is for me now

My mate learned in a RS turbo and another in a V8 defender can you imagine peoples faces when 2 tonnes of landrover comes tanking down the road with L plates on! He also took his test in the landy and when requested to turn the vehicle round in the road he just did it in one turn! he got made to do it again though.

Near me I have seen a few brand new merc estates with L plates on and also a Range Rover anyone else seen anything else more unsuitible than that!?

Cool

I don't know if it happenned or not, but I know of a driving instructor who when I was learning to drive was waiting for a Sabb 900 Turbo, on the basis that he had to drive it as well, so it had to be something he was happy with

I learn't to drive in a Ford Orion Injection Ghia, in Black with the full body kit on!!

At the time, I thought it was pretty quick and quite cool....no doubt there are a few people out there who still do!!

I passed my test in a Mazda 121 which then went onto become (I think) the Perodua Nippa....

How the mighty had fallen

I learned in my dad's Saab 99, there were hardly any tarmac roads where I grew up in Sweden, so I developed some interesting driving habits and failed my test the first time!

First lessons were in a Skoda - the old three box ones with the engine in the wrong end. The instructor who had that lives along the road from me now - 25 years later he's managed to move up to a Starlet!

Rest of the time I learnt in my Mum's Austin 1100. Wasn't allowed out in my Dad's car (a Mazda 929 Coupe) for a long time after passing. Probably just as well - I still have memories of fish-tailing it out of Princes St and up the Mound first time I took it out in the wet. Don't know who was more scared - me or the taki driver coming the other way

I learnt in a field in a beaten up Morris Minor van (to drive that is). Great fun. But my mate learnt in his dad's Aston DB5. The good news was that I passed my test first so I could go round to his house and take him out for a lesson in the DEE BEE ;-)) Sadly he passed his test soon after so the fun ended. David

Learnt to drive 2 years ago in my brand new Overfinch 5.7 V8 Range Rover. 2 Months old at the time, never had so many looks!!, Used to have the L Plate on the back shelf (oops it fell down officer) and the front one pushed up inside the grille (the wind blew it there) :-) Blew a few hot hatches away as well:-) (0-60) 7.2sec well over 120 tops

The Merc was great as all the other instructors had Metros and Fiestas. A bit slow though as it was a 190D
