Right now, for example, the chat room is empty.

Too early for the Muppets...

Watch out when you go in the Chat room. Since I started going in there, my Firewall has been detecting "Hits" (Trojan Horses) everytime I now logon. I don't think it's co-incidence, I've *NEVER* been hit until I started Chatting and since then, every time I logon.

Get yourself a Firewall, ZoneAlarm is the best and is free (download it from

Question

Dave,

Lots of software you install on your PC sends information out of your PC when you are online, some just send the basic survey information you filled in when you installed the software, others are more mallicious and can place "Trojans" on your system which can open up your entire computer hard drive to anyone else. Also other people can try to peer at your hard drive while you are online by first "pinging" your computer to see if it responds (they may ping many PC's at one time) then take a closer look later if it does respond.

Effects vary from just peeking at your information to deleting files.

By default Windows is a very open system, a Firewall is a program which monitors your internet connection, and lets you control which programs can send info out, and also make your computer appear invisible to outsiders. One of the best ones IMHO (and free!!) is ZoneAlarm

This is just a very simplistic explanation.

Stuart
