Default Smaller size numberplate but the same size letters, is this legal?..

Hi guys, well i saw an M3 today, and it had one fitted, looked good also, I'm thinking about getting them fitted to my Subaru, but are they legal?

A mate of mine told me it is legal as long as the letters are a legal size, basicly its just the same reg without a boarder around it, heres a picture:

Anyone know weather there legal or illegal?

AFAIK its one of the few grey areas about plates, someone might know more than me on this one.
The DVLA do not specify a plate size however there is a chance you could fall into the layout of a number plate offense.
I would suggest that with the above plate you WOULD be liable for a ticket TBH as long as you have legal plates in the boot and say you were at a meet and forgot to change back to your road plates you will be ok.

im sure you have to allow a certain amount of reflective backing around each letter to be legal.

AFAIK as well as the correct spacing between the letters there has to be at least 1cm of reflective border between the letters and the edge of the plate.

hmm, looking at your comments has put me off the idea, i'm trying to avoid putting anything illegal on the car, because then i will have nothing to get points or fines for.

cheers for your comments guys.

It's illegal mate i got stopped for mine a while back and got given a form with what is and is'nt illegal. In a nutshell anything other than a standard plate with just the correct size letters and the correct size reflective is illegal. Even says that if you have a border with a badge at one end it has to be a euro flag. I got done for having a Subaru logo on mine

Also has to have the postcode of the people that made it and the BS standards mark.

Thought they got rid of that and now allow national flags. I know I can now have the Welsh flag on my plate Plus BMW have just supplied a private plate Z4 coupe to a colleague with the Union flag and GB underneath.

You used to be able to get a number plate with no border on it. From GT grafix I think it was. It was just letters with enough border to be in theory legal. lol.Don't think they are legal now or ever were but to the letter of the law they seemed to be.

As long is it's the correct font at the correct size, with the correct spacing between the letters/numbers, and has an 11mm border then it's legal. The best way to have a small plate and remain legal is to buy a 5 figure or less plate with '1' as the number(s).

I have a short reg number so I cut about two inch off either end, making sure that the gaps at the sides were the same size as the top and bottom. I've had it like that for about two years (including two MOT's) and never had a problem.
