Default In Car/Dash Cam help!

Hi,

I was wondering how everyone sets up their dash cams? Would be nice to tally a speedo reading with my dash cam on track days.

Also im using a HD camera on a suction mount but it suffers badly from vibration. Ive seen this mount being used professionally without vibration.

any tips on how to cut down the vibration? I was thinking a bit of mouse mat between the mount and the camera.

I have mine in the back window on a home made camera mount, it gets a good view of the speedo (60-130 mph) and driver, passenger and windscreen.

yeah its a classic

Ive tried on the rear window but i dont think the picture is really good enough. you dont get to see enough of the road.

I mean the vids where people have just the dials in. I take it these are mounted behind the steering wheel with some kinda wide angle lense or something?

Look good. Need to get the cam a bit lower on the rear window. Hopful about the mousemat idea.

So how does everyone get dial cam?

I would say there are two options... one would be a tiny camera with a wide angle lense sitting on the steering column, but that wont get all the clocks...

The other option is a bullet cam on the drivers side window, with a zoom lens? pointing towards the clocks

Good quality video there! What camera are you using?

I found that using bigger cameras on a small mount means more vibration... i have a small sony handycam on a fairly large camera mount, bolted to the car, which means it doenst move, only with the car

I also dont think it helps that you have the camera so close to the window... try mounting it up by the rear view mirror pointing down towards the bonnet a bit more

its a canon HF10. Tbh the quality is much better before put into youtube.

The sound settings were messed up hence the aweful sound on this vid.

Dont really wanna put thing on the driver side cos it might impare vision. Wonder how the youtube 0-60 vids are done.

Dont really wanna fork out for another 80 quid camer mount. GRD have a nice setup with 3 cameras, that might be worth while. When i get the scoob back on the road ill try out a few different possitions and see which i prefer.

I use this camera:

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Toshi...ToshibaCamileo

This mount:

Ball Head with Suction Foot SM10

Have had it on the front window, on the interior light and back window, all good results and all for less than £120.

The thing I found must irritating about capturing vid is getting decent sound (if that makes sense?!)
In the past I've bought loads of stuff, the last being one of those 'action' cams that captures at 640x480 and is the size of a matchbox. The video looks great but the sound from it is cr@p to say the least. I've also got a bullet camera but I couldn't find anywhere to put the mic to get decent sound without it being ruined by wind noise.

edit. that Tosiba camera looks pretty good, I'm almost tempted myself to add to my little used vid cam collection

Yeah sound is tough. You can buy external Mics tho. Directional ones.

Yeah jamz im in same boat. Still got my focus for the commute and scooby for weekends+track.

Looks like having the camera zoomed in made the vibration much worse. When the camera is not zoomed in things look further away n not really a real representation of whats happening.

I think a lighter camera on my mount would be good. Need to try sticking it to the dash or soemthing less susceptable to vibration. Even when the tank drives past it picks up the vibration.

Its so hard to get the perfect video... Ive tried loads of different things, and im quite happy at the setup ive got so far...

I think having a different lense helps matters (ive attached a fish eye lense to the camera to get such a wide view)

As for the sound... ive seen a few people put the mic under the rear of the car, by the exhaust, or even under the engine bay, stops wind noise and gets the sound of the engine

Aye i saw some drift cars at Japfest this year using the gopro setup, had two on his bonnet and some on the side of his car... neat looking little things, but i think ill stick to a camera that i can plug in (i use a can inverter to power my camera so the battery never runs out)
