Scooby Diesel Impreza
Hi there, I'm a long time scooby fan, but never owner.
I have recently been hankering after one with the addition of the diesel.
I prob do <30,000mls a year so the economy would have always killed me before.
I recently drove a brand new imprezza diesel and really liked it, but found it a little slow. It however only had 30 miles on the clock.
Has any one driven any of the diesels with a few miles on, and anyone driven a re-mapped one? How did it compare to 2.0L diesel BMW or VW/Audi/skoda 2.0tdi or even 1.9tdi??
Any insight much appreciated.

The Subaru Diesel (I've been told) has had it's power restricted for the UK market? (a bit like the petrol cars)...
But a 30mile old diesel will feel very tight... they usually take 10-15k to loosen up properly.

Ye i know it would become alot better after a couple of thousand miles, i suppose i was hoping someone here had driven one that had a few thousand on it.
I know there are companies offering re-maps of up to 185-190 bhp, but given its a new engine and not tested with re-maps to the extent of VW/audi etc are now, I'd be a little weary about buyin a new one and gettin it mapped after a few thousand.

A guy on the Subaru stand at the motorshow last year told me they had a hot diesel in the pipeline, Might be worth waiting on one of them. Ask the dealership that you had the original test drive with about the hot impreza diesel.
There is a chance the guy at the motorshow just wanted me to go away so was telling me anything to get rid of me, I did get a tape measure out of him though!!!

There are definately plans for an STi diesel imprezza with 180-200bhp, the dealer could tell me that for release mid 09, but It'll prob around the 35k euro mark here i'd guess, dealer doesn't know, where as the current 150bhp starts at 20k euro's, with the highest spec, sti lookalike currently costing ~32k euros.
Thinkin at the mo to wait for the Hot diesel, it will still only be similar to the current bmw 1-series in terms of pace. But with 3 year 100k mls warranty, 4wd an alot of other kit as standard for alot less $$$ than a 120d it looks like a no brainer.

Subaru are unfortunatley playing "catch up" in the diesel race...
The 180bhp diesel should have been their entry level diesel, with a 250 STI/D as their flagship....

Ye exactly, nail on the head there.
If you look at the diesel development in the last 10 years, i suppose it was probably 2000-2001 when diesel became a good performance/economy choice, if you look at it that way, subaru are only 8-9 years behind!
The new imprezza I drove felt a slower than my re-mapped 2005 vw caddy (105bhp standard, about 160 re-mapped).
If i were to give it another 10,000miles on the clock i'd imagine it would feel similar as the scooby makes more torque than the v-dub.

As it happens I've just rejoined the realms of Subaru ownership. A few years back I had a Forester turbo then a Spec B Legacy before spending a few years behind the wheel of a Type R Jag. Money's tight just now (the Jag saw to that!), so plumped for the diesel. However.....got a new hatch with the oil burner and 180bhp. Am told they've managed 240 bhp from this engine, but still testing, and that an STI/D has been spotted in Germany at the 'ring. The 180 output is supposedly standard for the UK diesel engines but detuned so Subaru can reduce their tax exposure (based on average CO2 output of all cars on their price list). As has already been said, needs some miles to loosen up, but goes pretty well..for a diseasel :-)

I bought a new wrxd last June and it has just turned over 10k miles
for the first 8k miles I was slightly disapointed with fuel economy 42.9 per tank then all of a sudden it seems to of getting 45.6 per tank with my standard 10 miles blasts to work and I'm Always late so don't hang about
On a good run I get 49 mpg on a long run eg 200 miles
The car took to 4000 miles to loosen up and then seems to find another gear 6k then later 8 k the car seems to be getting faster
I have a classic turbo and regulaly compare speed tests in various sections of my er... Private driveways and there is less then 10% on part of the sections
Things I miss is the noise and suspension is too soft for me on the twistys but a great refined car for the normal A roads

Makes a great commuter, but I agree with LordH, the suspension is too soft. Remap and a few other bit will happen when I can afford it. Noise will also be sorted, just need the time to nip down to H+S.
Can easily on my daily get 49mpg, although I have on 1 occasion managed to get the computer to read 57mpg!!
