Default 2005 sti - what engine mods with c. 3k

Probably just gonna get an sti (or maybe sti ppp) and with about 3 grand to spend want to know what engine mods?

hear so much about different turbos but which is the best? want drivability but aiming to get to 360+ bhp asap.

will i need a new turbo for this? and will i afford it with this budget?

what else is necessary?

do you think it would be worth getting a car with the ppp for the exhaust and fuel pump? considering the ecu would be remapped again?

dont bother with the ppp if you are going to upgrade the car anyway, waste of cash

APS inner wing induction kit
GT spec 2 headers and up pipe
3 inch open mouth "Snakehead" design decat exhaust
walbro or bosch uprated pump (could be worth spending some extra cash and getting a daddy pump thats larger than the 255 lph pumps to future proof as you should have the spare cash in the budget you have)
Fuel pressure regulator (go for good quality one such as a fuel lab to future proof)
AVC-R
Ecutec remap (if you wish you could run a percentage of E85 bio ethanol if you have a station close that sells it, or if you can get methanol run a mix of that)
Samco / Perrin induction elbow (can be had cheap 2nd hand)

about 2K (if you source some 2nd hand parts)and car should be 350ish bhp and slightly less torque

Graeme

you should think about having the wastegate ported out as the VF35 is known for boost creep, I had to do this with mine

If it means increasing your budget by not getting a PPP car, i would take that route.

Exhaust £700, remap £750, TD05/18g turbo £800, filter £50, fuel pump £80.

Add on labour and you should be around the £3k mark. You'll be around 370bhp.

(Some other things to consider and if the budget allows: 3 port boost solenoid, colder plugs ie. NGK7's).

ok - one thing - coming from a car with loads of torque - is there anyway i can ensure i wont lose torque - really id like to gain torque aswell as power!

is the TD05/18g the best bet for drivability, no loss of torque, 360 bhp?

how much of a ball ache is it to get cats back on for MOT's?

You'll get more torque with tubular headers, but you'll lose some spool over ported headers.

I wanted quicker spooling and went with ported. All hell breaks loose around 3200-3500rpm.

gaz just viewed your scooby - i reckon they're the engine mods i'll go for - you've got some quality gains out of those mods - how much did that set you back? who did all the installation??

I've spent a small fortune on it, as i did it stage by stage, replacing parts, rather than going for the larger picture. In excess of £15k in 4 years inc servicing.

I've used all different companies to do the work. Dastek in Fife did a lot of work, installations etc. Andy Forrest has done all the mapping. I've used Powerstation for all the handling/suspension mods.

I was hoping to try an E85 map to try and crack the 400 barrier, but i need injectors/FPR for that and having spent £3k on the car just before xmas, the piggy bank is empty. We'll see...

I thoroughly recommend the 18g route. I did a lot of research and spoke to lots of people prior to getting that turbo. It was a toss-up between that and the 20g, but the 18g sounded much better for a road car. If i was starting again now, i might go for the 321H route, but i'd like to drive it first to see that you're not losing too much spool etc.

(*Maybe Bonzee will let me have a drive soon. I'll pester him tomorrow )

I've got an 05 model UK STI with PPP and after my Bugeye WRX I was mighty impressed with it. However after nearly 3 years for ownership I'm in the process of upping the power now the brakes and suspension are sorted.

I've spent quite a bit of time researching my planned mods. Speaking to reputable specialist tuners is a must, however some of the advice I have been given has been varied to say the least .

If your plans are to take the power to approx 360bhp then I would go for a standard STI as the money you would save initially buying the standard car could be spent on your future mods. The uprated fuel pump fitted to PPP cars are about the only thing you would keep as the PPP exhaust only supports up to approx 340bhp.

How you approach your desired power depends on how much you want to spend and where you are going to stop (in terms of power). The standard internals, clutch and gearbox can take approx 400-440bhp and high 300's of torque with careful ECU mapping and how you look after the engine. The standard TMIC and airbox (fitted with a uprated air filter) are again suitable up to the high 300's.

If you want 360bhp and similar torque then I personally would go for:

A standard STI car.
A 3 inch exhaust including down pipe (from the turbo back). £500 - £1000+ depending on quality. If you don't want the bother at MOT time with emissions there are numerous quality sports catted exhausts on the market that do very little in reducing the power of the car compared to cat free exhausts.
Get the original manifold (headers) ported - £100.
TD05/18G or 20G turbo - £950 but remember these are re-conditioned turbos that potentially could be 15 years old, however buying from a reputable tuner should come with a 12 month warrenty.
Spark plugs (hotter rated such as NGK PFR 7B) - £40.
Fuel pressure regulator - £200 or larger fuel injectors - £400
Uprated fuel pump - £80
Uprated air filter - £40
ECU re-map - £650.
Labour costs - £?

My advice is to buy the best quality proven products you can afford and take your pride and joy to a reputable Scooby specialist. Speak to tuners for advice. Some might disagree with my advice but there are plenty ways to go in achieving your goals. The choice is yours at the end of the day.

Finally another option would be to buy an STI with all the work carried out on it already.

I chose the MD321H and it kicks like a mule between 3400 and 4000 rpm, my self-imposed limit till JGM maps it !

It may have lost a few hundred rpm to spool vs VF35, but once it does ! Crikey...

But not a cheap option, but my car is a keeper, not able to afford a newer one, so modded mine.

HTH

P.S. I'd try and get close before spending big money on a turbo swap. imho

I have an MY05 UK STI - it had the PPP fitted from new.

I had it remapped last year by Andy Forrest and its got approx 330 - 335bhp
Andy told me that it would be approx 350 with decat.

That's the cheapest way for sure, no turbo change. But you'll be at the limit of the turbo at 350. Unless you're running funny-fuel. If the OP is after 360+, i'd still go for the turbo-swap, but you wont need the injectors/FPR for around 370. Only after 400-ish.

have you considered a twin-scroll jdm sti ?

you won't have to spend anywhere the same amount to get 350 / 350 +

With headers it may just reach 360 bhp, however I'd suggest ignoring the numbers and making sure it suits your actual needs.

But, I have to say mine is probably a bit too much now !

LOL
