My MY 98 Sport has taken to making a very odd sound when it's fired up.

It sounds very much like a glugging noise, and seems to be very prominent in the centre of the car, behind the dash.I guess it's got something to do with the cooling system, and sounds very much like the noise you sometimes get when your radiators start to fill up in the house, when the heating comes on.

What the hell is causing this??

I've got the usual problem in that after the car has fired up and everything has circulated the noise goes away.I can see I'll get the usual response from the dealers'...'didn't hear a thing, when we tried it'

Any ideas?Car is in for 37.5K service next week, so want some ammo before it goes in.

Cheers
Steve

Are you sure it's not your petrol tank emptying?

(sorry I can't be of more assistance.)

Steve,

Sounds like a little air in the coolant mix. I would check the coolant level as a first stab.

I usually get it on my GT4 on startup and blipping the throttle from a longish cold idle. The sound I can hear is as described and comes from the heater matrix under the dash (centre).

There are of course other reasons why it does this, but I won't scare you with them

Cheers

Ian

Dont worry it happens with lots of cars for lots of reasons sounds like when yor hungry
usual cause water circulated around engine when driven goes through a thermostat and at certain temperature thermostat closes sometimes leaving a less fluid in the heater matrix then when you start the car in the morning thermostat re opens and releases fluid back into matrix hence the gurgle as it re fills.

Regards

Tim

Thanks for the tips,guys.

The question is:Why has it started happening all of a sudden?Had the car since new and never heard this noise before.
(perhaps I was paying too much attention to piston slap or dash bulbs blowing!)

Aero:If the other two are wrong then there's every chance it could be the fuel flowing away.Even in a Sport!

Steve
This is a common enough problem in some scoobs
My MY99 started making the same noise about 6 months ago
I made a few enquirys & found out that a lot of people have had the same problem and its nothing to worry about...
Must say though the first time I heard it it had me a bit worried !
have a look at this link

Cheers, Niall,

Although it's just another 'oddity' to put up with ,I feel a little more assured that it's nothing serious.

I'll mention it to the dealer when it goes in any way.

Thanks for your help
Steve
