aka the Scoobymania exhaust

Got it fitted today by Roger Clarke and the difference it makes is *staggering*. I am afraid of the car now like I was when I first got it, thanks a bunch Mike/Gav!

It sounds superb too, managed to frighten the life out of some poor guy in a Fiesta, and a lorry driver, and a pensioner

The turbo is now really audible and spins up much earlier, in addition the car now pulls like an essex girl

Go get one, you know you want one !

a very happy Mattski

I am really glad for you M8 - honest

Pete, you should definately go and get a big exhaust! It is superb mate, I am scared of the car again! On the way home from work I usually have a blast down a country lane I know fairly well, the car is much much quicker and sounds mega too, I even got some pops out of it

How much was it?

Have you told your Insurance Co?

Have you any warranty to worry about?

Do you think it goes faster just because its louder? or do you really reckon it is??

I remember when I was scared of the car - brilliant feeling - would like to feel that again!!

Enjoy it M8

FOR A BACKBOX????????????????????????????

HOLY COW THEY SAW YOU COMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I AM ABSOLUTELY FLABAGASTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I BLOODY WELL HOPE IT IS SOLID GOLD FOR THAT PRICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gobsmacked - have you any idea how much they cost to make????????? a backbox in Stainless for a Metro costs around the same to make as the Scooby backbox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just as a Ford Scorpio costs about the same to make as a Fiesta (that is absolutely true by the way). Just the market for each differs - each carries a premium - but good god man - nearly £600 smackers.......I am in the wrong business.

As an engineer I reckon the box costs £40 to make - not a bad profit!!!

Mattski,

When I fitted the Mongoose system it caused overboost.....basically the freeflow allowed the turbo to scoll up sooner and harder causing it to boost over the 15.5PSI allowed by the ECU. Now running with an APEXI boost management thingy I run 19PSI (1.3bar).

It sounds fantastic. I've had the Mongoose since 1997 and its still as good as it was when it was new.

To be honest I don't think I'd change it unless someone could prove to me that I could get good benefits from another system.

Cheers

Mark

Mark,

19psi!!! eek, I'm only hitting 12-13 at the mo. I quite fancy one of those apexi boost controllers. Is it the one with the blue screen?

Tis good that your exhaust has lasted that long, the build quality of the aftermarket stuff is way ahead of 'proper' stuff. I think that they probably build in some faults so it rots away!

This is a dumb question but how does the apexi enable you to run 19psi?

ta,
Matt.

I have no idea to be honest..... I gave a company SHED loads of money and said I want it to go faster !

I blew the engine last season running 25+ PSI on std pistons in an attempt to obliterate my competition in a modified STi 4 Type R. I did, but in the process blew then engine.

NOw its running Cosworth pistons, and APEXI boost system and fuel system running a lo boost of 10PSI and a high of 19PSI. Normally I run it in 10PSI as its appetite for SUL is stupid !!!

Yes it is the system with the blue screens. Many people say I'd have been better getting Motec fitted, but it seems to be OK for now IMHO.

For more boost I need a FM IC and a better ECU...but I need some more suspension first as the original stuff is somewhat lard & rolly poly

Cool

I agree with BlackScooby about the Mongoose.

Had my car (MY94 Black WRX with, yup, gold wheels ) dyno tested last week. Before the Mongoose was fitted it read 244bhp.

After the Mongoose it read 285bhp!! £410 for the full system, sounds great and as you can see, the power gains are fantastic.

Not too loud, lovely looking tailpipe and I'm a happy man except for the new experience of 'Overboost'!

Just need a re-map to sort it out...... Bring on the torque!

Question

Mattski

What filter did you get? Did i make much difference?

I am undecided between K&N, Blitz and HKS.

285bhp! wow, I hope I see a similar gain with the exhaust and uni-filter. There is still the Link ecu to be fitted too! How is overboost recognised btw? I know the gauge is an obvious one but is there anything else, perhaps something audible?

Since I have had the exhaust and gauge fitted there appears to be a kind of fluttering sound. I thought it was just pressure in the gauge but now I am not so sure.

ta,
Matt.

Overboost ?
Detected by accelerating like stonk, and then feels like you've hit a brick wall as the fuel cut comes into play as you hit 15.5PSI (I think ~ it was on mine)

Basically it stops accelerating so quickly it hurts

Rikki,

I did have a Blitz for a while but just didn't get on with it, all the torque seemed to vanish and stuff, very odd...

After the blitz I went back to standard for a while, it's only since saturday that I've had a uni-filter panel fitted and it is better. It's not a massive difference but it works well in conjunction with the exhaust.

Mattski

Forgot to say that I had my Pipercross Induction kit replaced with an HKS jobbie as well.

Major difference - quite loud but you can feel the 'free flow' of it all! (Do I sound like a hippy??!)

Overboost is recognised under hard acceleration when for a split second the car feels like it hits a brick wall and you're thrown forward momentarily. It then continues laying the power down....... Not very comfortable but its the only down side and is fixable.

Besides that, the car is a lot more willing to pull from lower down the rev range and it seems to have 'smoothed out' the power instead of REALLY kicking in at about 4000 rpm. It just pulls hard from 3000 to the red line (apart from when the overboost happens!)

And yes, 285 bhp from a MY94 WRX! Suprised me too - I may have to frame the Dyno sheet!
