Remote Locking

Remote Locking
Hey folks!
I have an Outback '99 and am a little bemused
. When I click "Open" or "Close", I don't see anything, no lights flash at all. On reading my handbook there is no mention of this. The annoying thing is that if it is quiet I can hear the locks trip, but any noise and I can't, so unless I am on top of the car I cannot be sure that it's locked, which negates "Remote" locking. Any input would be gratefully received!
