The WR1 is a UK only special edition.

The only jap car that was a special edition in 2004 anywhere near what the WR1 spec is, was the S203, you could call that the closest thing, but this put 320ps out of the factory, the WR1 started off at 265ps.

> the WR1 started off at 265ps.

I think that's a bit misleading.

The WR1's were built by Subaru(UK) from a base model imported specially (unique colour for UK) from Japan. The base model may well have started with less power but by the time it became a WR1 in UK it had 320ps.

So all WR1's were sold with 320ps. Yes it was fitted by Subaru(UK) rather than the factory but before sale unlike PPP which was done post sale.

I think we all agree that the WR1 was a unique UK model

What clouded the affair (if I remember right) was a number of bog standard STi's in WR1 colour coming across to the UK as euro imports as "Solberg" specials

Wot he said... though buggered if I can find anything on google for 'Peter Solberg Limited Edition'. It would not surprise me if this was used as the base for the WR1 seen as it was available throughout Europe (just not in the UK). Same as the Europe SWRT Limited editions = WRX300 albeit with PPP added in UK...

Petter solberg limited editon

The car that became the wr1, 1000 produced in ice blue, 500 were nicked by prodrive

Also there were 1000 in red and blue, I saw a red edition in a dealers showroom in Waterford in Ireland, but at 63,000 euro it was a tad expensive

Not actually correct

The upgrade was fitted by Prodrive after registration BUT before the car was delivered to the dealer. This made the buying process a little complicated for those of us who bought new WR1's as the car had to be taxed and insured several weeks before it actually arrived at the dealer and was ready for collection.

The WR1 was 305 and remained the most powerful UK only Subaru until the RB320 at 320 BHP. The Hawkeye STi then got PPP to get to 305 BHP.

The wr1 was 316bhp, 320ps, the performance enhancements were above that of the standard ppp on the 2ltr engine

WR1 = 320PS

RB320 = 320PS

Other than that the WR1 is a better car.

the RB320 has better potential due to the 2.5 engine,but so does the type25(blob eye)

Plus most of the WR1's I've seen never made anywhere near 320ps, lots were running under 300ps

It seemed to depend a lot on how you drove the car. At the first WR1 Owners Club meet, which was a rolling road day, my standard WR1 achieved the best result of any car present on that day. Mike Wood had come along and was plugging his laptop into each car and said the reason was simple, my car had been driven as Prodrive intended and hence the ECU was giving more boost etc.,.. than the cars that were being driven more gently.

The WR1 was an especially good overall package, if you ask around the original owners several of whom including myself have or have had much higher spec Impreza's since, it has been difficult to recreate the same overall driving experience offered by the WR1. Subsequent cars may have been faster, have more grip etc.,.. but it is actually much harder than you may imagine to create a car which is such a complete overall package in terms of the driving experience.
