I was selling mine for that money until the other day, point being there are other 02 STI's out there with low miles and FDSH.
I seen a uk300 on ebay too, and a few RB5's for real good money. could even get a blobeye wrx on a private sale

Subaru : Subaru impreza sti-wrx prodrive

This IMO would be the best for £6,500

hrm... at these prices it'd almost be worth buying an sti, swapping over the good bits from my wrx, slap the brembo's, the sti turbo etc on the wrx and sell it on

I reckon it'd work out cheaper than buying a gearbox only, and then i'd get a better engine as well

I know you said no classics but I'd go for a mint classic type r with that sort of dosh. Preferably one with an API rebuild.

SUBARU IMPREZA TURBO WRX STI VERSION 5 TYPE-R V-LIMITED on eBay, also, Subaru, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 24-Nov-08 14:30:04 GMT)

Stunning car IMO. I'd wait until after christmas. I beleive things are going to get worse in the new year and these cars will be even lower value.

Wow, now that is a strange one. Its one a Y plate, it has bugeye STI seats, bugeye interior, blobeye front end and blobeye rear lights and bumper.

Seems quite dodgy.

yeah that is a strange one! i think it is a facelifted bug (front and back!). its even still got the external aerial on the drivers side A pillar - i thought these stopped in late 2001 on the bugs?

And looking at it, theres a huuuuuge panel gap between the front bonnet/bumper. still, its had some work to get it like that!

Just out of interest why don't you want a classic?
In my opinion i'd have a nice 2 door type r any day over a bugeye.

SUBARU IMPREZA TURBO WRX STI VERSION 5 TYPE-R V-LIMITED on eBay, also, Subaru, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 24-Nov-08 14:30:04 GMT)

Although this looks good for the money:
SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI 325 BHP V7 *NO RESERVE* on eBay, also, Subaru, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 22-Nov-08 18:35:44 GMT)
then you've got a bit of money for a rainy day with it.

Makes me laugh when I will be spending more a year on fuel! You might be able to buy an impreza but can you afford to run one?
