Excellent!. I had one exactly the same. Only problem was when those twist grip gears decided they would change gear, or go into the white bit (nuetral) under acceleration. Generally ended up with me having a sqeaky voice! Anyone who had one will know what i mean.

That brings back memories.

I was to short for a Grifter so had the next one down, the Raleigh Striker. My brother had the Raleigh Boxer.

Yep yep....I had that exact bike. Absolutely loved it. Happy memories of building ramps in the back garden and jumping over my brother pre BMX's. Weigh a ton though don't they. My mate round the corner quite literally had a purple chopper too!

This brings back memories, the Grifter itself was a pile of cr@p but us BMXers piled in to the local Raleigh dealer and spent all our pocket money on the handlebars, which were revolutionary at the time for us BMXers.

I had exactly the same one in red, my brother got the later MkII, it had a longer rear mudguard.

I remember that they weren't exactly lightweight like a modern bike either

Excellent. I had a red one, too. My twistgrip gear change was a bit dodgy as well!

Fantastic flash back

Anybody else notice it doesn't seem half as big as did back in those days.
Going back a step further do you remember the Raliegh Budgie and its older brother the famous "Chopper"

Those were the days, life was beautifully uncomplicated

I used to own a Raleigh Chipper (The Chopper's smaller brother) before the Grifter, kind of like upgrading from a hot-hatch to a Scooby

Snap, seemed like natural progression to me.
Chipper in Yellow and the Blue Grifter, ended up spraying it in a 2 tone black and gold and had the front forks electroplated before it was stolen from the front of the house.

awesome!!!!
too young for the 70's, my 2nd grifter saw me into the 90's!!!! (hand me down in red from the big lad next door) my first blue one was written off on a homemade ramp, much like the chopper that preceded it wish i was more careful now.............

marvelous mate. Had one the same as that in red. used to fold your rubber bit on the mudguard under to rub on your tyre to sound like a motorbike or was that just me?. A few days old and me and my cousin removed the rear wheel, hacksawed abit of the frame out and put a racing wheel in its place Looked like a back to front penny farthing Got pasted for that one. Eventually got the face lifted model with the long back mudguard with the hoop over it. Top bikes, progressed onto the Murray 10.

omg, im guilty for doing that aswell. I had a tomahawk before the grifter.
Then moved on to the blue and yellow Raleigh burner with the yellow plastic wheels.

The Boxer was to the Grifter, as the Tomohawk was to the Chopper.....

Cool. Looking at the pictures I think I was right to say that the Tomohawk was the Choppers little brother though, as it was a proper bike...

I had one of these too, in black. It was way too heavy to keep up with the kids on BMXs though.
