Question Is 76k miles high?

In my pursuit of a Scooby, I came across a 52 plate STI at my local dealer so went to have a look last week. However, it has 76k miles and they were wanting £8999 for it . Naturally, I had a look and walked away.

The car itself was in quite good nick and if it wasn't for the mileage, i'd have probably asked for the keys to have a look inside, more out of interest and to see what deal could be done.

However, i've checked the website today and they've knocked it down to £6995, which is more reasonable and a lot less than what i've been looking to pay, so i'd be looking to spend a grand or so straight away on a remap and alike. They've had the car in a while so I reckon i could get a good deal on it, but the mileage is still putting me off.

Should I have reason to be concerned because it's not in my nature to buy higher mileage cars, or should I see what deal can be done?

Number of owners is more of a give away IMHO

One owner means it's been looked after, many could mean it's been a thrash and sell job.

Try it and listen for knocks, whines, and look for smoke !

P.S. 12,000 miles a year is average, many of us do less than that tho'.

I don't do many miles myself, so the average would drop slightly over the time i'd have it. It's just the fact that it would say 76000 every time I look down.
Saying that, I bought a 2 year old CTR with 2500 miles on that fellto pieces within 12 months/10000 miles.

IMO 76k is nothing for a car of that age. It's japanese, it will easily do double that, at least

I certainly would not be put off by the mileage if the car was in good nick otherwise.

Service history will be vital as well as everything else people have mentioned.

I would personally shop around a bit though as there will be plenty of lower mileage examples on the market the way it is going.

Properly serviced, low owners then go for it. My WRX on an 03 is on 68k and gets intermediate oil changes the works. Most miles are off boost on the motorway heading to work so the car is hardly thrashed. 76k should not be a worry at all and as with that CTR some cars need to be driven regularly. Average miles and a good service record can show a reliable car and not one that has been run for a few miles, not got up to temp, boosted and switched off again.

You also have to consider selling it on. Its been on the forecourt for a while probably because of its mileage (and price), which although not really above average appears to have put people off (assuming there is nothing wrong with it). Ask yourself: is there a chance that I might need to sell it? How often do you change cars? Chances are you'd also struggle to sell it.

One crap owner is worse than 5 good ones.

However, you'd need to check the history and make sure it's been serviced etc.

A car that changes hands every year or less could indicate a problem car that keeps getting shifted on. Depends on car though, many sports and exotics change hands regulary as many people just want one for a short while.

Don't think I can link to the actual car, but you'll see it in the list. It has an exhaust of some description on it but not sure what type it is, not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Just been to look at another one that was described as immaculate, but it was far from it when I got there. That, coupled with the fact that I could get to speak to anyone in nearly an hour meant that I left without even sitting in it

Scooby Matt......something does'nt look right about the car, the headlights look smoked, I can't see the STi stickers down the doors, I thought the Bugeye UK STi came with different fog covers and there is an Orchiari or Morette rear spoiler. No Rear wash wipe I can see so not JDM...... Hmm !!

The rear spoiler is an add-on, only Prodrive Edition cars got a "big one" on a bug-eye, otherwise looks standard enough.

St Ledger are pretty good, find the details of the previous owner and ask ?

P.S. For £6500 I'd have it.... two nice !

I've done 18k since December in my 07 STI. As above, if serviced and owned by someone with half a braincell they should run and run. FSSH and a good owner is all you need to look for.

It looks like a UK STI (non Prodrive model), so the grill is correct and it would have come with a small spoiler as standard. Aftermarket one fitted. Correct bumper and fog lamp covers too.

Personally wouldn't buy anything with more than 50-60k miles.

Why? Are people still living in the dark ages? Average miles per year is now around the 14/15k mark that's average so in 10 years the car would be reasonably expected to do 150k no problem.

Manufacturers know this and as said a well maintained motor that has been used is much better than a badly maintained one with no miles on it. Why would someone buy a car and not drive it?

This whole 'ooooh wouldn't buy a car with more than two years milage on it even if it is 10 years old' business needs to go in the same car myth bin as 'i never let petrol get below 1/4 as you get all the rubbish from the bottom of the tank' it's twaddle!

If it goes well, runs well and you can see it has been well looked after it should cause you no issues.

Dunx and DCR

You are correct.......... I went back to all the advertising blurb I kept from when I bought my bugeye and it does indeed have the correct fogs and grille

I obviously had another Midlife moment

I'll get my coat ..

Average mileage is now calculated as 13,000 miles for the first 3 years and 10,000 miles thereafter.
That came from either the Glasses Guide or CAP; can't remember exactly which.
