Piston slap in modified block
#1
Thought i would post this here as it may be of interest to a wider audience than in Drivetrain.
Had the modified replacement short engine fitted about 6 months ago because my car had developed the dreaded pison slap.... thought all was fine and dandy and very carefully ran the new one in just in case...
However, over the last month or so i thought i heard the same noise back again.. gradually got worse and after taking it back to my dealer (most helpful guys) guess what ? Piston Slap again...
But on a modified block i says.. how come... no answer i'm afraid...
Anyway it now appears tha Subaru UK have developed a replacement piston kit for the single offending pot and mine is off next week to be cured again... so we shall see....
Yeah i thought they only replaced the piston on the sport but apparently not any more...
Be interested to hear if anybody else has suffered slap on a modified short engine !!

oh dear
i had a short engine fitted last weekend, and my warranty runs out in 5 mths
Not completely happy as it is, as they re-used the original cambelts ...something that asfar as i`m aware is a big no-no! 15k to cambelt change, which means that i`m gonna be running it with dodgy cambelts once the warranty runs out.
...and to top it, i`ve just read this!

Dick,
Where did you have the work done?
I am taking mine to Pullens in York with suspected piston slap. I hope they replace the whole block and not just the piston, and I will make sure they use a new belt!

This was what I was being told by my dealer, but he was waiting for info from IM on when they would or could replace it. I have just called IM and left a message for a guy, so I'll start to chase the dealer again.
Ric - 6 months left on warranty - but nearing 60k sooner rather than later........

If you have a block replaced for the piston slap as I have all they do is put the same type of block, piston back in, there are no modifications or piston material upgrades. Subaru are trying to develop a replacement piston for only the piston that starts to slap instead of replacing the short motors.
If you get piston slap on any other car in the Subaru range they replace piston number 4 and not the short motor as in the Turbo model.

Jason,
Just went to see my dealer - they are not aware of any modified pistons from Subaru (yet), plus the warranty manager is now on holiday for the next 2 weeks.
Have you been given any indication of when the new piston will be fitted to your car?

Hi there,
If you have slap... then either the block and pistons will be replaced....
Or the bores are bored out to the next size (+0.25) and oversized pistons are fitted...
Chances are Subaru is doing this on the engines that are sent back...
But I am just speculating.
Maybe this piston kit is just oversized pistons ?
I would be puzzled how the same size pistons would stop slap, unless the stock pistons are distorting, making the side skirt cross-sectional area smaller ? Anyone measure a "faulty" piston ?
If you are fitting oversize pistons.. they all need to be replaced...

Richard,
Car is in next week to have the new piston fitted... so i guess whatever the fix is must be ready !
Jay,
No idea what this new fix involves... dealer just told me that they have developed a way of replacing the piston of the faulty pot similar to what they do on the non turbo engines that develop slap...
