Default Buying my next classic - your ideas on running costs please?

Hi
Havent run a classic scoob for a while and trying to budget as to how much it would cost to run per year. So after your thoughts and gut feels on what the running costs are.

It would be a second car so not a daily driver. WRX MY 98-99ish

Here is my stab at costs per year

Insurence is about 500ish for me being an old git
Tax well lets allow 200 (This may go up)

Tyres One set of GDS3s fitted 500ish

Servicing - oil service (200ish) and one major all fluids (700ish)

Thats 2100 basic

plus fuel
plus say 500 per year towards that new clutch ect

How do those figures look to you. How much has yours cost to run over the last year?

(If I say allowed 2500per year exculding fuel - that should cover it I hope)

Cheers
Steve

Also do you recon that I should leave it untill the end of the year. I mean prices are low now - but do you think they will get lower given whats happening with the economy?

Not owned mine for that long but if you looking to buy one now, the market is in your favour as their prices are relatively low.

I have just carried out a full oil and fluid service on my classic. Done a few bits like oil, coolant and filters change myself and then had a workshop do the gear and diff oils. In total I've spent about £135 and thats millers oils used throughout.

Yep thinking I might do the oil and filters myself. Never done it on a scoob before. Is the sump plug easy to get to on em?

I was going to say do the oils yourself. Sump plug is easy. There is a cover on the underside of the car, but I think uou can get to both the oil filter and plug with it on.

I've found parts quite expensive to get hold of, especially original Subaru parts. £43 for the rocker cover gasket set. Considering there are two rocker covers...

There are some real bargains to be had out there at the moment though, I saw a 98 classic go for £1900 on ebay the other night.

My running costs so far (coming up to 2 years) have been;

2x Interim services @ £60 each
1x Big service (all fluids, plugs & Cambelt) £150
1 set of Toyo's £260
Insurance is about £500 p.a
& a pair of rear disc's & pads & caliper service £150

Works out about £850 a year which is pretty reasonable! but then I do, do my own oil & filter changes & I've got a mate who's a mechanic who does the bigger stuff.

I would keep a rainy day fund tho' (£1-2K) for something big like, Turbo/Clutch/G'box or, which happened to mine ...a rebuild @ £3K

Dont take this the wrong way, but if you have to ask about the cost of running these hungry beasts, your either cant afford it or your going to struggle with the costs.
When the modding bug bites, thats the start of the slippery slope.. deep pockets time.

You can do a lot of your own work on them to save a few ££'s, but always expected the unexpected theres always somthing that crops up. For example I got caught out with a new clutch & flywheel, not a cheap bill there. You can drive easy on the fuel to extra miles out of the tank, but these cars are not built to crawl along. Soon as the foot goes down, so does the fuel gauge.

Thats the kind of answer I was after. Thanks

So I am going to budget
1k for running costs - per year
1k For the rainy day fund - per year
Plus all that fuel.

For those blating on about counting pennies ect. I have run two of these before this will be my third (so I know abit about em), I have been on here since 2001 but I havent run one for a few years now - so want to know what the costs are like in todays money in ball park terms.

I think it’s a very good question asking about running costs you don’t have to have bags of cash to have/run a classic as long as you know it’s going to cost a fair bit to run.
Why people say if you have to ask about running costs you cant afford it
I would put a bit of cash aside for other parts if/when you need them, pads, discs etc and you never know what else will go wrong but if you look around for parts and can do a little work yourself you can save a fortune

IMHO running cost are insignificant, well compared to fuel costs.

20mpg, equates to £400/month ballpark
