Default Noob/Opinions please..

Hi guys..

New to this forum and maybe new to scooby ownership after tomorrow..

I'm going to take a look at this motor tomorrow and was wondering if people could let me know their opinions or let me have any tips on what to look out for.

I've been a skyline owner for the past couple of years so time to get back on the learning curve!

looks well nice..

i would say at the top of the price range ..

but i only paid 4300 for a my00 version6 with 80,000 but it didnt have as many mods and it was not as clean as that one ..mines got a few stone chips extra ..

i cant comment on the mods and the bhp as i dont know that much , but sure someone will point you right ...

Thanks Phil.

I won't be paying that price that's for sure!

If I do buy it, I will get it on the dyno - anything else is just guess work!

Anything specific to scoobys I should be looking out for?

I've heard people mention problems caused by induction kits? Any tell-tale signs?

think one of the biggest problems on my99 and my00 cars when having induction kits fitted is the damage it does to the maf sensor ..

if it doesnt idle right then i think its a sure sign that it needs replacing , if i was you i would replace it anyway for the cost of 75 quid its piece of mind ..

have read that failed maf can cost you a new engine

my advice is only from what i have read on here ..

and welcome to scoobynet

i believe thats chris purvis' old car, and well worth the asking price too if this is the truth.

in fact having looked again, im pretty confident it is his old car. low miles and well looked after.

do a search on here, may find some more details about it

its expensive in the current climate! but it does look nice. and has a good history file by the sounds of it. but it is a buyers market with over 2500 subarus for sale on auto trader alone!!!

I agree about the price.

I will be swapping rather than buying so that is not really a factor for me.

What do you think is a more realistic price for it?

to to re-itterate. the car was lovingly cared for by a member on here for some of its history, and is well known on here in general to the older members. a lot of the other £4k cars about are not well known and thus could have had a harder life.

again i think that is worth the price for the history alone as it is an unabused example.

£4k for that is a **** take and i would be insulted if someone came and offered that for it. not to forget all the subtle mods worth a bomb on there own and correctly installed/unabused.

Expensive and a bad colour IMHO, miss matched tyres indicate cost cutting in my eyes.
Better off with an import too at least it would be original!

yeah ok. better off with an import with no jap history (erm thats most then), a remap required to run uk fuel, short ratio gearboxes for those lovely high rpm motorway trawls.... and this coming from a dude with a black impreza... the hardest colour of all to keep respectable... certainly harder than red, trust me. brilliant.

1. What if you import and you're the first owner?
2. Mine hasn't had a remap for UK fuel.
3. No problems with the crazy short-ratio gearbox as I don't do motorways.
4. Nothing wrong with owning a black car!

3. No problems with the crazy short-ratio gearbox as I don't do motorways. some people do
4. Nothing wrong with owning a black car! the point being in reaction to red being a bad colour, my reaction imho being black is harder (prolly as i have a red car )

the point i was trying to make is the car is well known on here as being a superb example, regardless of age, colour etc, and it seems the people who have had opinions regards a high price dont seem to have that many posts.

just me being defensive on what i think is a fair price for an extremely well kept car. for the record my 99 uk classic isnt worth what chris' old car is, but thats because previous owners havent had the same car as i have, and the car isnt as modified either.

anyways back on topic.

ive pm'ed chris to see if indeed it was his old car and he can shed some light on whats i still insist to be an immaculate example of a dying breed

Wow.. thanks for all the opinions guys!!

Coming from a couple of years of Skyline ownership I have no idea what Scoobys are worth but the price of Skylines has plummeted in the past year or so and the market is saturated with models, good and bad.

From peoples comments it appears the situation may be similar with Subarus.

Value aside..

I am now the new owner of the above vehicle which I did a straight swap for my Toyota Altezza RS200 which was pretty immaculate but just not right for me.

I would have happily sold the Tezza for £4k so I think a good deal was had by both sides.

After 2 years of Jap cars I'm very happy to switch back to UK spec for a while. Not least because of the £200 reduction in insurance despite being a much more powerful car!

First thing I'm going to do is get it onto the rollers and make sure everything is running as it should.

Any recommendations for a garage to give it a 'once over' in the north surrey area would be much appreciated. No Subaru dealerships tho please - I don't need some YTS lout telling me his opinion!!

Hi guys. Certainly was my old motor. This car was a really good example that I spent many hours polishing!

The only 'problem' was the 'old faithful' piston slap when cold. The guy who bought it from me didn't like the noise. Think he took it to TSL who said the big-ends were failing (even though big-end failure is a completely different sound, trust me I know!) . He sold it sharpish I believe. Don't know if it had a rebuild but that was at 57000 miles. Not bad for her to go another 6K on knackered shells.

Have to say though that the eibach springs with standard dampers and prodrive geometry inspired a lot of confidence, be wet or dry. The braided hoses, pagid pads and master cylinder support bracket also made the trusty 4pots feel one hell of a lot sharper.

I'd check the engine history over the last 6K/14 months with the owner first. If ok and you don't mind a bit of piston slap when cold (about 2-3 mins) then I'd go for it mate. Worth every penny.

Hi Chris

Thanks for getting in touch.

It is a bit louder for the first couple of minutes but nothing that sent alarm bells ringing in my mind. I'm gonna take it in for a dyno run and a road test just to make sure everything is running smooth.

I'll get pics up at the weekend.
