Best Cruising Speed
trying to find the best Cruising speed in a classic to save fuel.
Poping down to cornwall next month and the other classic did quite well on fuel.
Was thinking sitting at 60 and getting behind a truck and sit there.
Any idea's

just stay off boost.
although for the fuel it saves and the boredom factor its not recommended.
take a fiesta diesel down there if you are bothered about cost

Do drive to Devon quite often 300+ mile each way.
I have found that it makes next to no difference as it is the other idiots on the road that prevent you from maintaining a nice constant speed.
Always end up using about 7/8 of a tank on the whole journey when trying to be economical, 1st hundred miles about 1/4 of a tank, silently thinking to myself ohhh..... looking at 400miles to a tank here. 100 miles later, its well below the half and im wondering if the classic tank is shaped like an ice cream cone ?
Just boot it occasionally and enjoy the drive down

take your lead right boot off for the journey and you'll get as good as is possible from a scoopapoo

I went down to St. Ives back in february from Bristol and once the M5 motorway stops there is a brilliant dual carriageway where you just won't want to economise your fuel. You can't help but boot it as the road is just asking to be cained.
Not really an answer to your question but...

for a uk classic ive found 70-75 is the best cruising speed. 80mph is just onto 3000rpm and boost so every little throttle blip yeilds a judder as it were.
70-75 is around 27000rpm and much easier to sit at that speed.

Without faffing around with the car it's difficult to achieve fuel economy.
If you're Andy F, you optimise a map for cruise and run lean AFRs down the motorway. For the rest of us, that's a tad difficult.
Turbo spool zone is likely to be main gas guzzling area, other than WOT and high revs.

I managed 37mpg in my old uk classic once. Was a blazing hot day though and no aircon. Was following the father-in-law to be, so 60mph max!
It is achievable though.

will be driving in the early hours anyway, about 2ish, kids will be asleep, might just stick the tv on and potter on down,
Always, go to cornwall at least once a year, and last year we had the other classic, which did really well, and we was running late for the hotel, so it wasnt a steady run, but did get 320 before i need to refill, So going this time in a newer classic, and hoping to stick at one speed, and see what it can do, I know i can get 186ish from half a tank on a motorway run, So lets see what i can do, on a full tank.
386miles York to Newquay,

am all for pushing the scooby, but think about it, whats the point in wasting 2 tank fulls to get there, when you could take your time and do it in one (hopefully) and your looking at £50 per tank so thats £100 out of your holiday money just to get there and another £100 to get back, can get a bloody flight for that, lol
Will be pushing it around there lovely country roads anyway.

Put it this way: I regularly do a 65 mile commute to the Gfs house, mainly on the M25 and M3. If I drive with economy in mind i.e. no/little boost etc I can do that on less than a quarter of a tank.
If I have some fun, it's more like a third of a tank.
Do I normally try and achieve the former. No way! Where's the fun in that: if economy bothers you that much the Scooby is the wrong car for you.
That said, it's nice to know you can get it to cover decent distances on a tank of petrol when need be: we don't always want to drive to make best possible time etc..
The depressing thing is when you work out how much time you've saved by using that extra petrol. The difference in time between a economy run and a *ahem* enthusiastic run is about 10 mins!

Mines totally the opposite (they must have turned the ice cream cone upside down on the newages).... I drive off the forecourt and it drops a bit ... 5 miles later big drop ... goes past the quartermark about 35miles ... half mark about 85ish miles but always returns better than 230 miles to a tank ... given up reading it just reset the distance every time and know I've got at least 230 miles I can get out of it !!!
