Default any experience with painting/powdercoating wheels?

Im thinking of getting wheels done in an anthracite. Whats actually involved. Im getting quotes of £75 plus vat per wheel powdercoated or Work can paint them for £100 the set? Does it make much difference?

Theres a place in Barnsley called Metal Magic,my mate has just had his powder coated there in satin black and they've made a top quality job.
17"-£35
18"-£40
Drive in service £25 per vehicle
all prices plus vat.
They take the whees off, remove the tyres, paint then put them back on and balance them if you like 01226298544

Drive in service means you drop the car off, leave it with them and they do it all.

Powder coating will generally be a lot harder wearing and more resistant to chips, also gives a really nice deep gloss that is hard to get with paint and lacquer.

Paint is OK, I did my wifes MG wheels in white a year ago, and apart from a few small chips they are still looking OK, did take a lot of work though, and with the materials spent on them and time it would have been just as easy to get them powdercoated.

I had mine powder coated (anthracite) at a place called Romax. They do the same thing - you drop the car off on the morning, they remove the wheels, take the tyres off, shotblast the wheels, powdercoat them, put the tyres back on and you get the car back by late afternoon. It cost around £180 and they still look like new after a couple of years.

Got mine done by a guy off junc39 of the M1 called tony. Proper engineer as well so quality work cost £60 a wheel but mine are 2 piece specials and I required a new rim or so I thought and OZ only made 20 of them an wouldnt/couldnt supply a rim. He welded and diamond cut the rims and painted the inners gold top quality work

I think I will try and find one of these dropp off places they sound the best.Dont really want to spend more than £200. What if they have curb marks or chips? Do these get sorted or is it an additional cost? Id be willing to drive quite far to get them done

Be very careful of powdercoating wheels that are heat treated. The heat from cooking the powder can change the makeup of the alloy and weaken the wheels.

I certainly know of a few sets of wheels that have cracked after powdercoating.

The wheels I had reconditioned were in a bad way, with some severe kerbing (from previous owner I hasten to add). I don't really understand how they sort this out, but afterwards they were (literally) like new. A very worthwhile thing to have done IMO, as long as you're going to look after them that is!
